Gabriela Koukalová, 2017 world champion in biathlon - special Czech slogan cancellation

Merci beaucoup Slavek !
On April 7, 2017, the Czech Post put into circulation a new slogan cancellation dedicated to Gabriela Koukalová (born in 1989) to celebrate her world champion title in biathlon.
Gabriela Koukalová indeed won the gold medal in the women's sprint event (7.5 km) at the world championships held from 9 to 19 February 2017 in Hochfilzen, Austria.
During these same championships, Gabriela Koukalová also won a silver medal (individual) and a bronze medal (pursuit).
This cancellation, put into circulation by the main post office of Prague 1, was applied to this pretty letter. Thank you very much Slavek!

A portrait of Gabriela Koukalová is featured on this cancellation as well as a mention of her title of world champion in Hochfilzen. To note that we can almost read (on her bib) the name of one of the main German sponsors of the Biathlon World Cup...
Gabriela Koukalová, one of the most popular sportswomen in Czech Republic, won the overall ranking for the 2015-2016 Biathlon World Cup and also two silver medals at the 2014 Olympic Games in Sochi.
Slavek franked his letter with a stamp (9 CZK) issued on February 8, 2006 to announce the Olympic Winter Games held this year in Turin, Italy.
That stamp, designed by Zdeněk Netopil and engraved by Bohumil Šneider, evokes cross-country skiing, probably an allusion to Kateřina Neumannová and her 6 Olympic medals (including a gold medal at the woman's 30 km freestyle event in Turin). The same stamp was issued again on March 15, 2006 with a surcharge evoking this gold medal won by Kateřina Neumannová.
To note this additional label (23 CZK) to reach the current tariff (32 CZK) for a priority shipment up to 50g to European countries.

EUROPA 2017 (Castles) stamp set on FDC from Romania

As in previous years, the Romanian Post put into circulation, on April 12, 2017, a series of two EUROPA stamps (design : Victor Telibaşa) declined in sheet of 32 stamps each, in minisheet of 6 stamps each, as well as in two versions of miniature sheets of 4 stamps (2 of each).
Before "Bridges" in 2018, the theme chosen by the organization PostEurop for the EUROPA stamps issued in 2017 is "Castles" ("Castele" in Romanian).
Thank you very much Mihnea for this beautiful illustrated cover sent by registered mail from Bucharest (post office No. 37) on the first day of issue, including these two se-tenant stamps, extracted from one of the two miniature sheets of 4 stamps (print run : 7,500 for each miniature sheet) with the EUROPA logo in the lower right margin!

The FDC cancellation shows a part of the Hunyadi Castle (or Corvin Castle), "Castelul Huniazilor" in Romanian, depicted on the L 4.50 stamp above.
This Gothic-Renaissance castle is considered as one of the largest fortresses in Europe, located in Hunedoara, a city in west-central Romania (Transylvania region).
This castle was built in the middle of the 15th century (on the site of an ancient fortress) by the Transylvanian Voivode John Hunyadi and then enlarged and restored over the centuries, especially from 1868 (architect : Ferenc Schulcz) after a fire.
The second stamp of this series (15 L) is dedicated to the Károlyi Castle ("Castelul Károlyi") located in Carei (also in Transylvania), in the north-west of the country, on the border with Hungary.
As its name suggests, this castle belonged to the noble Hungarian family of the Károlyi, a fortress originally (14th century), turned into a castle at the end of the 18th century.
The three facades of this castle today combine different styles (romantic, baroque, neo-Gothic).

Argentina-Russia joint stamp issue : shared traditions !

Merci beaucoup German !
On November 14, 2016, an official ceremony took place at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Buenos Aires on the occasion of the issue of a joint series (2 stamps) between Argentina and Russia, devoted to the theme of the popular traditions of the two countries, in particular the tea and mate ceremonies.
It should be noted that this was the first joint issue involving these two countries.
I have already mentioned on this blog the Russian version of this joint set and I'm happy to share with you this nice cover sent on March 30, 2017 from the town of Villa María (province of Córdoba), franked with these two Argentine stamps ($ 11 each). Thank you very much German!

In Russia, tea is mainly drunk in porcelain or faience cups (sometimes accompanied by a slice of lemon), whereas Argentineans consume rather mate (infusion of yerba mate leaves), with a strong and bitter taste, in a calabash gourd with a metal tube which also serves as a filter, called "bombilla".
This Argentine version is different from the two Russian stamps, with the presence of additional elements (presence for example of a kettle on the "mate" stamp) as well as the flags of the 2 countries.
As a reminder, the Argentine Post (Correo Argentino) had withdrawn this series from sale following a printing error (the $ 11 nominal value was missing on some "mate" stamps)...
German also used above two stamps being part of the definitive series (9 stamps) issued on August 4, 2016, focusing on national production of fruits, peaches ($ 1) and oranges ($ 50) here.

On this occasion, on November 13, 2016, the Indonesian Post issued a very nice numbered souvenir sheet (print run : 8,000) composed of 2 stamps (5,000 Rp each) featuring some old kris, this asymmetrical dagger, one of the symbols of Indonesia.
Thank you very much JC for having sent me this official FDC (print run : 1,000, sale price: 13,000 Rp), with a cancellation from Yogyakarta!
To note this FDC postmark depicting the logo of this exhibition, inspired by one of the historical street lamps of this city (cf this example on the envelope to the left).

The logo (Caesalpinia pulcherrima flower) of the next World Stamp Exhibition held in Bandung (from August 3rd to 7th, 2017) is also included in the upper left corner of this souvenir sheet.
I do not have precise details about the kris in the spotlight on this souvenir sheet (when they were made, decorations...).
The kris or keris is inscribed on the representative list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2008 and according to UNESCO : "Both weapon and spiritual object, the kris is considered to possess magical powers. The earliest known kris go back to the 10th century and most probably spread from the island of Java throughout South-East Asia. Kris blades are usually narrow with a wide, asymmetrical base. The sheath is often made from wood, though examples from ivory, even gold, abound. A kris' aesthetic value covers the dhapur (the form and design of the blade, with some 40 variants), the pamor (the pattern of metal alloy decoration on the blade, with approximately 120 variants), and tangguh referring to the age and origin of a kris".

"Kaamatan and Gawai Food Festivals" stamps on FDC from Malaysia

After a first part (3 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet) put into circulation on January 24, 2017, on the theme of Chinese food, the Malaysian Post issued, on March 16, 2017, a second part (3 stamps + 1 souvenir sheet also) of its series devoted to food festivals of the country, this time Kaamatan and Gawai Festivals celebrated respectively in the states of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo.
As a reminder, two more series will be released during the year, marking festivals celebrated by the Malay and Indian communities.
A big thank you Khor for this official FDC, with these traditional chopstick-shaped (called "chandas") postmarks from Ipoh (State of Perak), regarding the 3 stamps of this series!

These two Kaamatan (or Harvest Festival) and Gawai Festivals are celebrated each year respectively in May by the Kadazan-Dusun ethnic group living in the state of Sabah and in June by the Dayak ethnic group from the state of Sarawak.
Many events (dances, songs...) are organized during these festivals, also marked by culinary traditions illustrated on these 3 stamps, such as this alcoholic beverage (called "Lihing" in Sabah, made from tapioca or "Tuak" in Sarawak, from rice) and this dessert "Kuih tapai" based on fermented glutinous rice, wrapped in banana leaves (60 sen stamp).
The stamp in the middle (80 sen) is devoted to a traditional dish made from sago (fecula extracted from the pulp of the sago palm tree) cooked in a starchy porridge, called "Ambuyat" or "Linut".
The last stamp (90 sen) shows a dish called "Manuk Pansuh" based on spicy chicken, cooked in a bamboo covered with tapioca leaves. The second dish on that stamp, called "Hinava" or "Umai", is based on fish (raw shark), crustaceans or seafood, lemon juice, onions and bambangan seeds (from an endemic plant to the island of Borneo).

India-Portugal joint stamp issue : folk dances

A big thank you Alka for having sent me this beautiful FDC, with cancellation from Kolkata dated January 7, 2017, regarding the joint souvenir sheet issued between the postal administrations of India and Portugal, having for theme some traditional dances of the 2 countries!
As a reminder, I had already published on this blog a letter franked with the Portuguese version of this souvenir sheet.
This joint issue reminds us of the close links between these two regions of the world for more than 500 years, both economically and culturally through, in particular, these very ancient dances with great similarities : Dandiya, the stick dance of Gujarat (5 Rp stamp) and the dance of the Pauliteiros de Miranda in Portugal (25 Rp stamp).

As for the Portuguese version, the Indian Post issued these two stamps separately (print run : 310,000 each) as well as in this souvenir sheet (print run : 110,000), with some typical ornaments of the two countries in the background.
To note the application on the top left of this envelope of a cachet evoking the famous glasses of Mahatma Gandhi, father of Indian independence and cantor of resistance to oppression through civil disobedience, based on the principle of non-violence.
The mentions "Clean" and "India" in Hindi are inscribed on both glasses, with the slogan "One step towards cleanliness", recalling a current action of the government of Prime Minister Modi.

UPAEP 2016 (Olympiads) stamp set on cover from Dominican Republic

As a reminder, UPAEP (Postal Union of the Americas, Spain and Portugal) is a restricted union of the UPU, established in 1911, bringing together about thirty countries and territories.
Such as EUROPA stamps, America-UPAEP stamps are issued every year since 1989, with on average between 15 and 20 participating countries.
After the topic "fight against human trafficking" in 2015 and before "tourist places" in 2017, the theme chosen for these UPAEP stamps in 2016 was devoted to the Olympiads, presumably to celebrate the first Olympic Games in history ever organized in South America, in Rio de Janeiro.
As it is the case each year since 1989, the postal administration of the Dominican Republic (Instituto Postal Dominicano or INPOSDOM) has put into circulation, on October 18 2016, a UPAEP series consisting of 4 se-tenant stamps.
Thank you very much Alejandro for this beautiful letter sent by registered mail on April 3, 2017 from Santo Domingo, the capital, franked with this complete set!

Alejandro Vignieri is the designer of almost all the stamps issued by INPOSDOM since 2008 and was kind enough to sign on this envelope.
Through these 4 stamps (RD $15, print run : 80,000 each), the Dominican Post wanted to recall the sporting disciplines in which the Dominican athletes were distinguished at the summer Olympic Games.
Since its first participation in 1964 at the Games in Tokyo, Dominican Republic has won a total of 8 medals (3 gold, 2 silver, 3 bronze), in athletics (3 medals), boxing (2 medals), weightlifting (1 medal) and taekwondo (2 medals).
At the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, the Dominican delegation was composed of 29 athletes engaged in 11 sports and won a bronze medal in taekwondo (Luisito Pié in the men's 58kg event).
It should be noted that the issue of these 4 stamps (each including the UPAEP logo and the Rio 2016 Games logo) coincided with the 70th anniversary of the creation of the Dominican Olympic Committee.

Egg's traditions during Easter celebrations - new FDC from Moldova

As it is the case every year, the Post of Moldova has issued, on 5 April 2017, a series (2 stamps) dedicated to the Easter celebrations ("Sfintele Paşti" in Romanian).
Designed by Alexandr Kornienko, these two stamps (print run : 100,000 each) have been printed in a same sheetlet of 5 pairs.
These 2 stamps appear on the official FDC below (print run : 400), also designed by Alexandr Kornienko, with cancellation from Chişinău (MD-2012). Thank you very much Nicolae!
The illustration on the left shows the cathedral of the Nativity of Chişinău as well as this Easter Acclamation "Hristos a Înviat!" ("Christ is Risen!") used to greet during this Easter period.
The theme of this series (as in 2009) is the tradition of decorated eggs, existing still today in most of Eastern European countries, mainly Orthodox (Ukraine, Romania, Russia, Moldova...), symbolizing the resurrection of Christ and his exit from the tomb.

The colors and patterns painted on these eggs are often inspired by everyday objects (carpet or ceramic ornaments). There are often drawings evoking the "tree of life", the sun, the stars or animals such as snake, birds, fish...
These eggs, traditionally painted on Holy Thursday (3 days before Easter), are often red today, symbolizing the sufferings of Christ but also regeneration, purification, spring or eternity.
The stamp above on the right (L 15.50) evokes a traditional game during these Easter celebrations in Moldova : everyone in the family picks a hard boiled egg (painted in red here), chooses a partner and then they knock the eggs. The winner is the last standing person with a whole egg !

More precisely, the 1.75 L stamp of this series is devoted to another tradition in Moldova : before going to eat, one puts a red painted egg, a fresh unpainted egg and a few coins in a pot of fresh water.
After having said a prayer, people wash with this water and touch the right cheek with the red egg, saying : "May I be all year round beautiful and happy like this egg!", and then touch the left cheek with the fresh egg and say : "May I be healthy all year round like this egg!".
This tradition is also illustrated on the card above (also designed by Alexandr Kornienko), published in 2017, showing this same girl (with a different hairstyle...) in front of other symbols of this Easter period : some willow branches with catkins as well a traditional Easter cake in Moldova (called "pasca" or "cozonac"), its round shape reminding the sun.

"80 years of Prague Airport" stamp on FDC from Czech Republic

On April 5, 1937, after almost four years of construction, the new Prague airport was officially inaugurated, built in the district of Ruzyně (northwest of the Czech capital).
The Czechoslovak government wanted then to replace the first civil airport in Prague (built in Kbely in the late 1920s), due to its insufficient capacity.
Today the largest airport in the country (entry point for international flights), this airport has welcomed more than 200 million passengers and more than 4 million flights since its creation.
80 years to the day after its inauguration, the Czech Post has released on April 5, 2017 a special stamp dedicated to this airport.

Designed by Michal Brix and engraved by Jaroslav Tvrdoň, that stamp (32 CZK) appears on the official FDC above (print run : 3,600), with a cancellation from Prague representing an old logo of this airport. Thank you very much Bret!
As on the stamp, the engraving to the left on this envelope shows an old aircraft model as well as the old control tower built in 1937 (which was since integrated to the terminal 4 of this airport, renovated in the 1960s and then 1990s).
This airport was renamed "Václav Havel International Airport Prague" ("Mezinárodní letiště Václava Havla Praha") on October 5, 2012, in tribute to Václav Havel, former and first Czech president (he died in 2011) and one of the main figures of the Velvet Revolution having put an end to the communist regime.

A big thank you also Bret for the First Day sheet above regarding that same stamp.

Cover from the United Nations office in Geneva

Thank you very much Pierre for this special cover sent on April 11, 2017 from the United Nations office in Geneva, one of the 3 offices of the international organization, with Vienna and New York!
This office is located in the Palais des Nations in Geneva since 1946, where about 1,600 people work today.
Since 1951, the United Nations Postal Administration (UNPA) is managing the issue of stamps from these United Nations offices.
The definitive stamp used here (CHF 1.50) was put into circulation on May 10, 1991 and depicts the United Nations emblem with stylized olive branches featuredin 8 different colors (why 8?).
To note on this envelope these many indexation marks, at the top and bottom (and also on the other side !)...

That stamp, printed in sheet of 50 stamps, was designed by Maurice Gouju who also created 4 stamps for the French Post between 1988 and 1996, including the stamp issued in 1995 to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the creation of the United Nations.
As a reminder, it's Argentina which proposed in 1947 that the United Nations issue its own stamps. The first United Nations stamps, denominated in U.S. dollars, were issued on October 24, 1951 in New York, following an agreement with the USPS.
Similar agreements followed with the Swiss (in 1968) and Austrian (in 1979) postal administrations. More than 1.000 stamps have been issued since 1951, printed by government printing offices but also private security printing companies.
The themes featured on UNPA stamps are obviously related to the activities of the United Nations : peace, human rights, environment, endangered animal species, UNESCO World Heritage...

On 5 April 2017, the Czech Post has put intocirculation a new stamp, being part of the series "Beauties of our country", devoted to typical sites or landscapes of Czech Republic, the Porta Bohemica here.
Designed by Adolf Absolon and engraved by Miloš Ondráček, that stamp (20 CZK, printed in a sheet of 2 x 4 stamps) appears on the official FDC and the First Day sheet below. Thank you very much Bret!
That stamp depicts a characteristic landscape of this region of Porta Bohemica, meaning the canyon formed by the Elbe River (Labe River in Czech) as it enters the České středohoří (Central Bohemian Uplands) mountain range , about 80 km long in the north-west part of the country.

The village of Velké Žernoseky, on the right bank of the Elbe River, is represented on that stamp, surrounded by vineyards, with volcanic cones belonging to this České středohoří mountain range in the background (Kletečná on the left and Kubačka on the right).
Once is not customary, the FDC cancellation above was not put into circulation in Prague but in this village of Velké Žernoseky, with this bunch of grapes recalling the wine tradition of this region.
The engraving to the left on this FDC (print run : 3,400) evokes another aspect of this Porta Bohemica with this gneiss rock promontory topped by this calvary (with 3 crosses) in the foreground and the Radobýl and Říp hills in the background.

A big thank you Bret for this First Day sheet above regarding that same stamp with the mention "Krásy naší vlasti" meaning "Beauties of our country".

New "Singapore Skyline" ATM stamps on FDC from Singapore

Merci beaucoup Terence !
On March 20, 2017, the SingPost has released a new version of ATM stamps entitled "Singapore Skyline".
This series replaces the previous version ("SG50 - Celebrating the nation's Golden jubilee"), issued on August 14, 2015, about which I wrote on this blog.
Four of these new ATM stamps were used on this special letter below sent on the first day of issue from the Shenton Way Post Office (south of the main island). Thank you very much Terence!

France-Canada joint stamp issue : 100 years of the Battle of Vimy Ridge

After 1984 (Jacques Cartier), 2004 (Pierre Dugua de Mons) and 2008 (Foundation of Québec), a 4th joint stamp issue between Canada and France was put into circulation on April 8, 2017, on the occasion of the centennial commemoration of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.
This battle took place during World War I, from April 9 to April 12, 1917, not far from Lens (Pas-de-Calais) on a fortified site by the German army which had been the subject of several unsuccessful attacks by the French and British armies before.
On April 9, 1917, the British Empire troops, mainly composed of the four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force commanded by General Byng, joined their forces and succeeded in taking control of that ridge on April 12, 1917.

This battle is seen as a prominent event in Canadian history, allowing then Canada to assert its identity as a strong and independent nation.
Among the 30,000 soldiers involved (and at least 20,000 Germans), nearly 3,600 Canadians lost their lives and more than 7,000 were wounded during this battle.
In 1922, France granted Canada, freely and for all time, the use of this bruised land and an immense monument was erected there between 1925 and 1936, designed in particular by Canadian sculptor Walter Seymour Allward.
It is this Memorial that is honored on this joint issue, two stamps printed in a souvenir sheet, designed by Canadian designer Susan Scott and Sarah Bougault for France respectively.
The French version of this souvenir sheet (print run : 450,000), beautiful with stamps and margins engraved by Sarah Bougault, appears on the First Day Cover above, with its cancellation (also designed by Sarah Bougault) from Paris. Thank you very much Roland!
The preview sale of this souvenir sheet was also held in Vimy and Arras, with the same postmarks.

The Canadian version of this souvenir sheet above (print run : 130,000) with the same two stamps but different margins (overview of the monument and trenches).
The stamp on the top left ($ 2.50, € 0.85 for the French stamp) was also issued in a self-adhesive version (permanent domestic rate - $ 0.85) in a booklet of 10 stamps.
That stamp depicts the two imposing columns (40 meters high) of this Memorial in the background (symbolizing Canada and France), with the names of the 11,285 Canadians who died on French soil during World War I and had no known grave.
Some of these names are readable on that stamp (lower left part), also representing a crown of laurels and the statue "Male Mourner".
The statue "Canada Bereft" is depicted on the 2nd stamp, with the flags of Canada and France in the background.
Other sculpted groups belonging to this Memorial are featured in the margins of the French souvenir sheet ("The Defenders, The Breaking of the Sword" and "The Spirit of Sacrifice").
This Canadian National Vimy Memorial already appeared on stamps in the past, for example in 1936 in France for its inauguration or in 1968 in Canada to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the end of World War I.

Slavek franked his letter with two stamps devoted to the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Games. The 18 CZK stamp, issued on February 10, 2010 to announce these games, is featuring an athlete in a speed skating event.
