300 ans du Palais de justice de Douai

300 years of Douai's Courthouse in France

After the signing of the Treaty of Utrecht in 1713, the Parliament of Flanders (the 10th Parliament of the Kingdom of France) moved to the city of Douai (Nord) in October 1714, in a religious building dating from the 13th century and then occupied by the refuge of the Abbey of Marchiennes.
On October 3, 2014, the French Post has issued in preview sale a special stamp (€ 0.83, print run : 1,000,000), engraved by Martin Mörck, devoted to the 300th anniversary of this Douai's Courthouse.
I was very lucky to receive the two FDC below with postmarks (designed by S. Coffinet) from Paris (the same cancellation was issued in Douai). Thank you very much Roland and Joël :-)

This building will known many changes, especially in the 18th century when the northern part was replaced (in 1784) by the neoclassical building depicted on that stamp, with its gallery with Gothic arches on the banks of the Scarpe river.
After the French Revolution, the Parliament of Flanders loses its duties when Douai became the capital of the department of Nord and then the building was occupied by the "Directoire départemental".
The Court of Appeal of Douai (which now occupies the fourth place in France by the volume of cases handled) was created in 1817.
An extension of this building, a 9 floors-modern tower (to the right on the stamp) was established in 1978 and other works are planned in 2016.
