Timbre EUROPA 2014 sur lettre d'Aland

EUROPA 2014 stamp on a cover from Aland

As it was the case in the previous years, the Post of Aland (Posten Åland) has issued (on May 8th) only one EUROPA 2014 stamp whose theme this year is devoted to national music instruments.
It is that stamp (permanent "Europa" rate, i.e. currently € 1.10 - print run : 150,000), designed by Cecilia Mattsson from a photograph by Kjell Söderlund, that was used on the letter below mailes on June 4, 2014 from Mariehamn, the capital of the archipelago. Thank you very much Liisa :-)
That stamp celebrates probably the greatest pianist ever known from Aland, Alie Lindberg (1849-1933). Her portrait and her grand piano, donated to the Åland Museum in 1983, are included on that stamp.

Born in Sund in 1849, Alie Lindberg already mastered the piano at the age of five. She took courses in Helsinki at the age of 10 and traveled mainly in Germany from 16 years to study in Dresden and Berlin.
In the early 1870s, she participated in master classes of Franz Liszt in Weimar. Alie Lindberg would indeed have impressed the most famous pianist at that time and he would even have advised her to choose her grand piano, depicted on this stamp...
Exceptional woman of her time, Alie Lindberg gained great recognition as a concert pianist in the late 19th century. She played on the greatest European stages, mainly in Germany, England and the Nordic countries.
