70 ans du débarquement en Normandie

Normandy landings 70th anniversary

The French Post has issued on June 10, 2014, its 8th stamp (since 1954) devoted to the landing of Allied troops in Normandy, one of the major acts of the 2nd World War, which took place on June 6, 1944.
It is this time the painter and press illustrator Nicolas Vial (b. 1955) who designed that stamp (€ 0.66, print run : 1,200,000) illustrating this key moment of landing on one of the five Normandy beaches.
Nicolas Vial designed here his 10th stamp for the French Post since 2003 (Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union).
The preview sale of that stamp was held on 5, 6 or 7 June 2014 in 13 cities of Normandy as well as in Paris.
A postmark with First Day mention, designed by Aurélie Baras, was offered to the public only in Paris and three cities of Calvados (Ouistreham, Caen, Bayeux) and one city of La Manche (Sainte-Mère-Eglise).

I was lucky to receive the two First Day Covers above and below with cancellations from Paris. Thank you very much Roland and Joël :-)
The illustration to the left on the envelope above shows the code names of the 5 beaches of Normandy (Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword) where nearly 160,000 American, British, Canadian (mostly) soldiers landed during the assault Operation Overlord on June 6, 1944.
Soldiers of the French Army of Liberation, Poland, Czechoslovakia, Belgium, Norway or Australia were also part of this operation, preceding the Battle of Normandy, which allowed to fight Nazism and to free France and Europe.

More than 5,000 ships and 1,200 aircrafts engaged to parachute troops also participated in this landing which allowed the Allies to open a front in the West, paying the price of a heavy human toll, on the Omaha beach in particular (2500 U.S. soldiers killed on D-Day).
This operation ended on August 30, 1944 (liberation of the city of Rouen) when German troops cross the Seine river with a terrible record of 600,000 deaths (soldiers and civilians) and many almost ruined cities...

Thank you very much Stéphane for this 3rd first day cover above, with a postmark (without First Day mention) from the town of Argentan (Orne) !
That same postmark was also available in 6 cities of Calvados and 2 others of La Manche.
No peace dove on this cancellation but some jubilant French with American soldiers.
The city of Argentan was destroyed nearly 80% between June and August 1944 after many Allied bombing and terrible fighting between U.S. troops and those of the third Reich...
