100 ans de timbres au Liechtenstein - Bloc spécial

100 Years of Liechtenstein stamps - Special m/s

Merci beaucoup Olivier :-)
In a recent post on this blog, I've already mentioned this Philatelic Exhibition "LIBA2012" held in Schaan from 16 to 19 August 2012. This Expo's theme was the 100th anniversary of the first stamp issued by the Principality of Liechtenstein.
The post of Liechtenstein had already issued earlier this year (February 1) a set of four stamps devoted to this anniversary. These stamps, designed by H.P. Gassner, have been each issued in sheet of 8 stamps as well as in a souvenir sheet.
It is this souvenir sheet that appears on the beautiful cover below sent from LIBA2012, with some postmarks including the logo of this exhibition.
Thank you very much Olivier :-)

To note that this souvenir sheet includes unperforated stamps ! I don't know if a more classical perforated version has also been issued ?
The four Princes who reigned in Liechtenstein since 1912 are featured in this series : Johann II (reigned 1858-1929), Franz I (reigned 1929-1938), Franz Josef II (reigned 1938-1989) and Hans-Adam II (reigned from 1989).
To note that each of these stamps includes the years from 1912 to 2012 in Roman numerals.
The first series of stamps has indeed been issued in Liechtenstein on February 1, 1912. These three stamps (5, 10 and 25 Heller) then depicted a profile portrait of Prince Johann II and the words "K.K. Österreichische Post im Fürstentum Liechtenstein" reminding that the Post of the Principality was under Austrian administration following an agreement signed in 1911 between the two countries.
As it was the case before 1912, Austrian stamps were able to be still used in Liechtenstein. A new postal union with Switzerland in 1921 put an end to this double stamp's use...

Olivier also sent me the card above announcing this philatelic exhibition LIBA2012. This pretty young lady with her "stamped" bird is probably there to make us appreciate Liechtenstein stamps and philately in general !

Série "JO de Londres" en Hongrie

"London Olympics" stamp set from Hungary

The Hungarian Post has chosen a symbolic date for the issue of its two stamps dedicated to the 2012 Olympic Games in London : June 22, 2012, that is to say the official day that Hungarian Olympic participants take their oath in Budapest.
This series (print run : 100,000), designed by Ágnes Berta, appears on the cover below mailed on August 1, 2012 from the city of Esztergom. Thank you very much Bertalan :-)
By featuring Canoeing (Flatwater) and swimming events, the Hungarian Post was well inspired since Hungarian athletes won 9 medals (of 17) in those sports in London !

The Hungarian Olympic team, composed of 159 athletes competing in 18 different sports, got a very good result at these London Games with a total of 17 medals (8 gold, 4 silver, 5 bronze) and a ninth overall nation's rank.
In addition to canoeing and swimming, the other medals were won in fencing, gymnastics, athletics, judo, wrestling and modern pentathlon.
To note the presence of the beautiful (!) logo of these Olympic Games in London on these two stamps. As it is the case for many other postal administrations, no stamp devoted to the Paralympic Games has been issued...

Bloc EUROPA 2012 en Bosnie-Herzégovine

EUROPA 2012 m/s from Bosnia and Herzegovina

I've already shared with you on this blog a cover franked with the series of two EUROPA 2012 stamps issued by the Croatian Post Mostar, one of the three postal operators in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
By waiting the series issued by the Bosnian Serb Republic (Republika Srpska), Miro was kind enough to send me the second registered letter below, mailed on August 13, 2012 from Sarajevo, this time including the souvenir sheet (2 stamps) issued by the Post of Sarajevo (Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina).
Thank you very much Miro :-)
Devoted this year to tourism ("Visit..."), this Bosnian EUROPA stamp set, issued on May 29, 2012, was issued in that souvenir sheet as well as in a booklet of 6 stamps (3 of each) and a sheet of 10 stamps (5 of each).

The stamp to the left on this sheet features Baščaršija district located in the north-east of Sarajevo, built during the Ottoman period (15th and 16th century). This major tourist attraction includes many historic buildings, several mosques and the fountain Sebilj, present on that stamp.
One of the most impressive natural sites of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the waterfalls of Kravice, are depicted on the other stamp of this sheet. High of thirty meters, these waterfalls on the Trebižat river are located 40 km south of Mostar.
A Stećak, the name of these monumental medieval carved tombstones, widespread in the country (more than 60,000 !), is also included on this stamp as well as a typical boat dating from the Illyrian period.
The designer of this EUROPA series, Tamer Lučarević, has also created the third stamp above to the left, part of a series of two stamps, issued on June 25, 2012, devoted to ancient cities.
This stamp shows an aerial view of the fortress (Gradina) overlooking the town of Tešanj (the date when this castle was built is not known), one of the largest in the country.

Relations diplomatiques Thaïlande/Portugal - Emission commune

Thailand/Portugal diplomatic relations - Joint stamp issue

In 2011, the two postal administrations of the Kingdom of Thailand and Portugal have commemorated the 500th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries by issuing a series of 4 joint stamps.
This series, issued on July 20, 2011, is composed of two pairs of stamps respectively designed by Mayuree Narknisorn (Thailand) and Carlos Barahona Possollo (Portugal).
The Thai version of these four stamps appears to the right on the beautiful cover below mailed on August 8, 2555 (the equivalent of the year 2012 in the Buddhist calendar) from Raythakan (?). Thank you very much Edna :-)
This series reminds us that Portugal was the first western country to establish trade relations with Thailand during the reign of King Ramathibodi II (1491-1529), from the Suphannaphum Dynasty (Ayutthaya Kingdom).

These two pairs of stamps evoke the arrival of Portuguese ships (called "nau") in the city of Ayutthaya, the former capital of the country, 500 years ago.
Ayutthaya was built on an island surrounded by three rivers connecting the city to the sea, a strategic location
preventing attack by the sea-going foreign warships.
Attacked and destroyed in 1767 by the Burmese army and never rebuilt, its remains have been classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1991.
To note that Portugal and Thailand formally established diplomatic relations in 1859 with the signing of an agreement on trade and navigation...
Edna has used a fifth stamp above to the the left, part of a series of four stamps, issued on December 5, 2007, dedicated to the 80th anniversary of King Rama IX.
This stamp depicts one of the twenty white elephants, symbol of prosperity and power, belonging to the King...

JO de Londres - Oblitération tchèque très spéciale !

To celebrate the good results of the Czech team at the last London Olympic Games (10 medals : 4 gold, 3 silver, 3 bronze), the Czech Post has put into circulation, from 20 to 24 August 2012, a very special postmark !
It is that cancellation, designed by Miloslav Bláha, that appears on the registered cover below mailed from Prague on August 20, 2012.
Thank you very much Bret :-)
But do you know why this postmark, including the words "Blahopřejeme medailistům z Londýna" ("Congratulations to the medalists of London"), has this strange boot shape ?

A first indication on the photograph below showing the Czech delegation marching in the opening ceremony of these London Games on July 27th, 2012...
Bret has wisely used once again the stamp (20 Kc), in two copies, issued on June 20, 2012 by the Czech Post to announce these London games (I've already written about this stamp and its attached coupons in a previous post on this blog).
This stamp, featuring a javelin throw event, has maybe brought luck to Barbora Špotáková who has won a 2nd Olympic title in London !
The other stamp above to the left, issued on November 15, 2000, reproduces a work entitled "St. Luke the Evangelist" (circa 1365, Karlštejn Castle) painted by Master Theodoric, one of the masters of Gothic painting in Bohemia.

But let's speak again about this postmark thus evoking a part of the official uniform of the Czech athletes in London : rubber rain boots !
Probably a humorous reference to the uncertain weather of the British capital, the Czech athletes have indeed marched with these boots but also with umbrellas, designed from blue, red and black colors.
These colors were indeed chosen to remind the work "Amorpha - Fugue in Two Colors", painted just 100 years ago by the famous Czech abstract painter František Kupka (1871-1957).
This painting has already been reproduced on an Art series stamp issued on June 17, 1998...

Bret has also been kind enough to join his letter the numbered commemorative sheet above with another special postmark, also designed by Miloslav Bláha, issued in the city of Strakonice from 22 to 26 August 2012 on the occasion of his 20th International Bagpipe Festival.
I've not found any direct link between this festival or this city and the stamp used on this sheet ?
This stamp, also already mentioned on this blog, issued on November 9, 2011, reproduces a work entitled "Woman in Maize Field" (1910) by Joža Uprka (1861-1940).

Série "JO de Londres" en Ukraine

"London Olympics" stamp set from Ukraine

Merci beaucoup Alexander :-)
As it was the case in France or Slovakia, the Ukrainian Post has also issued a curious series of four stamps on the occasion of the Olympic Games in London.
This series does not indeed mention these London Games (the official logo is also missing). However, there is no ambiguity regarding the theme of this issue since it was issued on the opening day of these Games in London, on July 27, 2012.
The four stamps (design : Volodymyr Taran, print run : 150,000) of this series have been issued in a single sheetlet of 8 stamps.
This is the right half of this sheetlet that appears on the nice letter (bearing the Ukrainian colors) below mailed on August 22, 2012 from the city of Dnipropetrovsk. Thank you very much Alexander :-)

This sheetlet contains some gold mentions (in Ukrainian) in the top and bottom margins : the emblem of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine as well as the slogan "Sport - that's life !".
As usual, these four stamps were printed with the trident, this symbol of Ukraine, appearing on the arms of the country since 1992.
Three disciplines of athletics (shot put, long distance running, high jump) as well as a canoe racing event are shown in this rather successful yellow and blue stamp set.
The Ukrainian team, composed of 238 athletes at these London Olympic Games, competing in 21 sports, finished in a respectable 14th overall rank with 20 medals (6 gold, 5 silver, 9 bronze).

Voitures de collection - Nouveau carnet tchèque

New "Classic cars" Czech booklet

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
On September 5th 2012, the Czech Post will issue an interesting booklet that will delight all fans of Classic cars !
This self-adhesive booklet, consisting of six stamps (Permanent rate "E" for a letter up to 20g sent to Europe, i.e. 20 Kč now), reproduces indeed some drawings by Czech artist Václav Zapadlík (b. 1943 ), who became famous throughout the world from the 90s with its beautiful representations of old cars...
I was lucky enough to receive (a preview !) this booklet below, including cancellation marks. Thank you very much Bret :-)

This booklet also includes to the left a self-portrait of Václav Zapadlík (and his signature) as well as a small biographical text (in Czech).
To note that this series is the first set of stamps issued in the world devoted to the works of Zapadlík...

The other side of the booklet above includes the same biographical text, in English this time.
Three other Classic cars designed by Zapadlík are reproduced to the right : Škoda Hispano-Suiza (1928), Minerva AL (1932) and Praga Grand (1930).
The artistic vocation of Václav Zapadlík came early while working in his father's garage. He learned to know the cars of that time in the smallest detail. He presented to the public his first drawing, a Vauxhall Cadet (1932), in 1971. He has cooperated in particular with the Blackhawk Museum, opened in 1988 in California, famous worldwide for its unique collection of classic cars.
Bret was kind enough to send me also the six beautiful official FDC below (with six different postmarks from Prague), sure to delight car and art lovers !

Bloc "JO de Londres" en Bulgarie

"London Olympics" m/s from Bulgaria

Merci beaucoup Tsvetana :-)
The Bulgarian team (63 athletes in 16 sports), engaged at the last 2012 Olympic Games in London, has known one of its worst results in its history since the 1952 Helsinki games...
Only two medals have indeed been won (Silver in women's wrestling and Bronze in men's boxing).
The Bulgarian Post has issued (on July 16, 2012) the attractive souvenir sheet, dedicated to this 30th Olympiad, appearing on the cover below posted (from Sofia ?) on August 2, 2012. Thank you very much Tsvetana :-)

This sheet (1.50 lev, printing run : 15,000), designed by Ralitsa Nikolova, is featuring rhythmic gymnastics with the four apparatus used in this discipline only for female participants : hoop, clubs, ball and ribbon.
Bulgaria was represented in London in both team and individual (with Silvia Miteva) events.
To note the presence of the London Olympics controversial logo on this stamp as well as the emblem of the Bulgarian Olympic Committee in the lower margin, with a lion's head referring to the country's arms.
It is also a lion (stone bas-relief) that is featured on the second stamp to the right (0.65 lev), issued on May 22, 2012.
This bas-relief dating from the 8th century, was discovered during archaeological excavations in the region of Stara Zagora (center of the country). It is one of the oldest picture of lion in Bulgaria.

Record du monde "timbré" au Liechtenstein !

A Philatelic World Record in Liechtenstein !

From 16th to 19th August 2012 took place the philatelic exhibition "LIBA2012" in Schaan in the Principality of Liechtenstein, marking the 100th anniversary of the issue of the first stamp in this country (I will speak about in a next post !).
In the context of this Exhibition, a stamp design competition was held among the inhabitants of Liechtenstein and the nationals living abroad. Devoted to the theme "A Liechtenstein legend", participants were asked to design stamps inspired by one of the three famous legends of their choice : "Three Sisters", "The Wildmändli" or the "Giant of Guflina".
The opening day, visitors were invited to vote for their favorite designs among the three categories "Children (6-11 years)", "Young people (12-17 years)" and "Adults (18 years upwards)".

The drawings selected from these three categories then made the subject of a very special stamp issue. The souvenir sheet (consisting of the three winner's stamps) above was indeed issued in a record time !
Once the designation of the three winners, the Gutenberg AG printing house, located only 250 meters from the site of this Exhibition, has indeed managed to print this souvenir sheet in only 57 minutes and 50 seconds, setting a new world record !
A huge thank you Olivier for this extraordinary First Day Cover above devoted to this commemorative sheet and this world record certified by "Guinness World Record" whose emblem is included on the envelope to the left :-)

The three legends featured in this series are all originated from the mountain regions of the country. The "Three Sisters", who have been turned into stone according to the legend, today refer to a mountain on the border with Austria (Vorarlberg).
"Die Wildmändli" or "wild men" refers to the yeti-like creatures guarding the herds of peasants at the beginning of winter, in the region of Malbun.
The "Giant of Guflina" saved the inhabitants of the region of Triesenberg fighting a terrible dragon.
The photo above was taken at this Exhibition "LIBA2012" and shows to the left the representative of "Guinness World Record", Craig Glenday, certifying this new "fastest printing of a postage stamp" world record.
As a reminder, the previous world record belonged to the Austrian Post (that was present at Schaan !) with a time of 1 hour and 25 minutes (related to the printing of a series of stamps issued after the 2008 UEFA European championship final).

Timbre EUROPA 2012 à Saint-Marin

EUROPA 2012 stamp from San Marino

Merci beaucoup Matteo :-)
For once, the postal administration of the tiny Republic of San Marino has issued only one EUROPA 2012 stamp (on June 13th to be exact), devoted this year to tourism with the theme "Visit...".
It is that stamp (€ 0.65, issued in sheets of 12 stamps), designed by Paolo Maniglio, that appears on the cover below mailed once again on August 6, 2012 from Dogana, the most populated city in the country, located at the north-eastern border with Italy.
Thank you very much Matteo :-)

This stamp features the diversity of the population of tourists (more than 2 million each year) visiting San Marino, with these multicolored and smiling hands at the foreground.
A major tourist attraction in the country, the cableway that connects (since 1959) Borgo Maggiore to the city center of San Marino climbing Mount Titano, is also depicted on this stamp.
The blue and white colors of the background, evoking the flag of San Marino, are symbolizing the country's institutions.
Finally, to note the word "Visit" in English on this stamp probably to remind us that the website of the San Marino's Secretariat of State for Tourism and Sport is entitled "VisitSanMarino.com" !

The info has not drawn attention but Serbia, as an independent country since 2006 after its separation from Montenegro, has won its first ever Olympic gold medal at the last London Games, thanks to Milica Mandić in taekwondo (women's 67 kg).

"Roses" stamp set from Moldova - FDC

On August 10, 2012, the Post of Moldova has issued a nice new set of four stamps devoted to different species of roses ("Trandafiri" in Moldovan) growing in the country.
The First Day of Issue took place, this is rather unusual (most usually taking place in the capital, Chisinau), in the city of Bălţi, an important business and cultural center in northern country.
I was lucky enough to receive the interesting first day cover below about this stamp set. Thank you very much Sergio :-)
To note that this FDC (print run : 300 only) was designed by Vitalie Roşca, who is also the author of this series of stamps.

Not much to say about the roses featured in this series : "Mildred Scheel" (L 0.85), named after the wife of the fourth President of the Federal Republic of Germany, "Friesia" (L 1.20) , "Priscilla" (L 3.00) and "Caribia" (L 4.20).
To note that this series was issued in a same souvenir sheet of six stamps (2 x L0.85, 2 x L1.20, 1 x L3.00, 1 x L4.20).

Timbre "JO de Londres" en Islande

"London Olympics" stamp from Iceland

Merci beaucoup Benedikt :-)
The Icelandic men's handball team had won a great silver medal (beaten in the final by France...) at the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
It is probably in their honor that the Icelandic Post has featured a handball player on its unique stamp, issued on May 3, 2012, dedicated to the London Olympic Games...
It is that stamp (permanent postal rate for a letter up to 250g to Europe, i.e. ISK 580 now), designed by Björgvin Sigurðsson, issued in panes of 10 stamps, that appears on the cover below mailed on August 14, 2012 from the capital, Reykjavik.
Thank you very much Benedikt :-)

To note that the official logo of these London Games is not included on this stamp, only the emblem of the Olympic Committee of Iceland, probably referring to one of the many volcanoes in the country, at the bottom right.
The Icelandic delegation in London, consisting of 28 athletes, was engaged in six different sports : athletics, badminton, handball, judo, shooting and swimming.
No medal was won and it is again the men's handball team that had the best result with a 5th place in the Olympic tournament (again won by France !).
Since its first participation in the games of 1912, Iceland has won four medals : silver in 1956 (men's triple jump), bronze in 1984 (men's judo), bronze in 2000 (women's pole vault) and silver in 2008 (men's handball).
This is rather a good performance given the very small population of the country !

Hommage à Zheng He en Indonésie

A tribute to Zheng He in Indonesia

As it's regularly the case, the Indonesian Post has announced the organization of the 27th Asian International Stamp Exhibition "China 2011" by issuing a special souvenir sheet.
This exhibition was held from 11 to 15 November 2011 in the Chinese city of Wuxi. On the opening day (the famous date 11/11/11), the Indonesian Post has thus issued the interesting souvenir sheet appearing on the cover below mailed on June 13, 2012 from the city of Malang. Thank you very much Irene :-)
This numbered sheet (29525 / 30000), consisting of one Rp 10,000 stamp, includes the logo of this exhibition "China 2011" in the margin at the top right, in front of  the Pos Indonesia's one.

With this souvenir sheet, the Indonesian Post has had the great idea to pay tribute to the Chinese explorer and admiral Zheng He ("Laksamana Cheng Ho" in Indonesian), famous for having conducted several naval expeditions between 1405 and 1433 in Asia, in the Middle East and in the eastern coast of Africa.
The stamp depicts a part of Sam Poo Kong temple (also called Gedung Batu), the oldest Chinese temple located in Semarang (Java).
This temple was indeed founded (between 1400 and 1416) by Zheng He not far from where his fleet landed on this island of Java. After being destroyed in 1704, this complex including five temples was rebuilt with an architecture combining Chinese and Javanese styles.

Série "JO de Londres" en Pologne - FDC

"London Olympics" stamp set from Poland - FDC

As usual, the Polish Post has issued again a series of four stamps to celebrate the new Olympiad, the 30th, held in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012.
These four stamps (design : Agata Tobolczyk, print run : 240,000 each) have been issued in a same souvenir sheet with a upper margin featuring different monuments of the British capital.
I had the chance to receive the official FDC below devoted to this set issued on the opening day of these Olympic Games in London. Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)
To note the FDC cancellation from Warsaw, very simple, only including the Olympic rings as well as the emblem of the Polish Olympic Committee reproduced to the left on the envelope.

The Polish Post has been rather inspired since Polish athletes have won several medals in the sports featured in this series, excepting volleyball (which already appeared in the series issued in 2008 for the Beijing olympic games) !
Tomasz Majewski has indeed won once again (after Beijing) the Olympic title in the men's shot put event and Adrian Zieliński was Olympic champion in weightlifting (men's 85 kg).
Poland has also won a bronze medal in the rowing event (women's double sculls) depicted on the last stamp above to the left.
With a total of 10 medals (2 gold, 2 silver, 6 bronze), the Polish delegation in London (218 athletes competing in 22 sports) has known one of the worst performance in its history since the Melbourne games in 1956 (only one gold medal won)...

TAD spécial consacré à Mendel en Rép. Tchèque

In a post published on this blog on April 15, 2012, I shared with you the official FDC issued by the Czech Post dedicated to the monk and biologist Johann gregor Mendel (1822-1884).
As a reminder, the issue of this stamp coincided with the 190th anniversary of the birth of Mendel, considered as the founder of modern genetics through the famous laws of Mendelian inheritance defining how genes are transmitted from generation to generation.

On July 20, 2012, 190 years to the day after the birth of Johann Gregor Mendel, a special postmark was also issued in his native village of Hynčice (Vražné municipality) located in Czech Silesia in eastern country. In 1822, this village, called Heinzendorf bei Odrau, was then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
It is that cancellation, depicting the same portrait of Mendel as the one reproduced on the stamp, that was applied on the special cover above. Thank you very much Pavel :-)
To note also the presence of the Mendel's signature on this postmark.

Pavel attached to his letter the interesting postcard above showing an aerial view of the birth house of Mendel in Vražné, open to the public since 1965. Restored in 2007, this farm is now a museum dedicated to the life and scientific works of Mendel as well as this Czech region.

Merci beaucoup Bret :-)
I was also lucky to receive the commemorative numbered sheet (No. 44123) issued by the Czech Post above, incuding this same special cancellation of July 20, 2012. Thank you very much Bret :-)

I can not resist to show you also the beautiful registered letter of July 19, 2012 (posted from Prague) above, in which Bret sent me this commemorative sheet :-)
I've already referred to the four stamps used here in different previous posts published on this blog...

A table ! Lettre "gastronomique" de Croatie...

Dinner's ready ! A "Gastronomy" cover from Croatia...

Merci beaucoup Josip :-)
The Croatian Post has issued on July 2, 2012, a tantalizing booklet consisting of four self-adhesive stamps (and four labels "Priority/Par Avion") devoted to gastronomic specialties of the country, to products of the Adriatic Sea in particular.
Two stamps (4.60 kuna each, design by Damir Fabijanić) of this booklet (print run : 10,000) appear on the cover below mailed on July 16, 2012 from the city of Lukac. Thank you very much Josip :-)

These two stamps feature a dish made from common octopus (Octopus vulgaris), a species called "Hobotnica" in Croatian and "Botuni" on the Dalmatian coast as well as flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) with only some drops of lemon juice. This species of oyster is currently found only in Morocco and in the Bay of Mali Ston (near Dubrovnik) in Croatia. The consumption of these very delicate taste oysters would be a unique experience and a sort of transfusion of the Adriatic Sea in our organism !
For the dessert, some woodland strawberries (Fragaria vesca L.) with this third stamp above being part of a series of three stamps, issued on March 16, 2010, devoted to different fruits.
To note the round fictitious perforation on these stamps as well as some embossed parts (the four strawberries on that stamp)...

Livraison inhabituelle du courrier au Canada !

Unusual methods of mail delivery in Canada !

On May 13, 2011, Canada Post has issued an interesting series of two se-tenant stamps devoted to unusual methods of mail delivery. This series pays tribute to the history of Canada Post and the role of mail delivery in the development of the country.
These two stamps (59c, print run : 1,500,000), issued in a single sheet composed of 8 pairs, appears at the top right of the cover below mailed from Eureka on July 5, 2012. Thank you very much Maryam :-)
To note the special postmark from Eureka, this Canadian research base and weather station located in the Arctic on Ellesmere Island (Territory of Nunavut).
This cancellation also mentions that Eureka is the Canada's most Northern post office !

The stamp to the left features a "ponchon", a large barrel equipped with a rudder and a sail bearing the inscription "Winter Magdelen Mail". This waterproof "ponchon" was created in the winter of 1910 by the inhabitants of the Magdalen Islands after the rupture of a telegraphic cable interrupting communications.
Composed of steel boxes filled with letters, this barrel included a message imploring the finder to mail the letters. This was done over a week later when the barrel arrived at Port Hastings (Nova Scotia).
The other stamp evokes postal transport by dog team, the only reliable method of mail delivery in isolated areas of northern Canada (until 1960) before the advent of aviation.

Maryam also sent me the second letter above franked with two self-adhesive stamps, issued on May 17, 2012, dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the Calgary Stampede.
This cover has been thoughtfully posted on June 14, 2012 from the city of Calgary, Alberta, "Heart of the New West" as mentioned in English on the special postmark above.
The Stampede, created in 1912 by the cowboy Guy Weadick, is regarded today as the greatest Rodeo outdoor show in the world, each year attracting over a million visitors during the 10 days of the event.
These two stamps evoke the Wild West with a rodeo horse (Permanent rate stamp) and a gold and silver belt-buckle marking the centenary of the Stampede ($ 1.05 stamp).
To note that these stamps are the first augmented reality stamps issued by Canada Post, making them come to life after downloading a special "Stamps Alive!" app.
On these two letters, Maryam has used different stamps issued in 2007 and 2010 being part of a nice definitive series devoted to beneficial insects.

Série "JO de Londres" à Saint-Marin

"London Olympics" stamp set from San Marino

Merci beaucoup Matteo :-)
A noter l'oblitération mécanique rouge incluant encore l'ancien logo de l'administration postale de Saint-Marin.
This is probably one of the most original stamp series devoted to the Summer Olympics in London !
The tiny Republic of San Marino has indeed issued, on June 13, 2012, an interesting series of four se-tenant stamps evoking these games and the participation of the athletes of San Marino.
It is that series that appears on the cover below mailed on August 6, 2012 from Dogana (municipality of Serravalle), the most populated city in the country, located to the north-eastern border with Italy. Thank you very much Matteo :-)
To note the red mechanical cancellation yet including the old logo of the postal administration of San Marino.

These four stamps (€ 0.50 each), issued in sheets of 12 stamps (three horizontal strips of 4 stamps) have been designed by Marco Ventura and printed in France by Cartor Security Printing.
The first stamp above to the left evokes the historical aspect of these Olympic Games with the flame (that was reintroduced for the first time at the 1928 Games) and a woman wearing the laurel wreath presented to winners of the ancient games in Greece.
The other three profiles evoke sports (swimming, athletics, shooting) in which athletes from San Marino have competed in London (Clelia Tini, Martina Pretelli, Alessandra Perilli). To note that a fourth athlete, Emanuele Guidi (archery) was also part of the delegation of San Marino.
Alessandra Perilli narrowly missed out on winning San Marino's first ever Olympic medal during these games in London, finishing in fourth place of the women's trap final...
Finally, to note the words in English ("Games of the XXX Olympiad"), and not in Italian, on these four stamps and to note also that neighboring Italia has not issued any stamp dedicated to these London Games.

Série "JO de Londres" à Singapour - Pli 1er Jour

"London Olympics" stamp set from Singapore - FDC

On July 27, 2012 (the opening day), the Singapore Post has issued a nice set of four stamps dedicated to the 30th Summer Olympics, held in London until tomorrow.
I was lucky enough to receive the official FDC below about this stamp series. Thank you very much Terence :-)
The designer of this series, Andy Koh, has chosen to feature the official mascot of these games, Wenlock, practicing different sports in which athletes from Singapore are engaged during the London Games : table tennis (1st Local), swimming (65c), sailing ($ 1.10) and badminton ($ 2.00).
To note that the 23 athletes from Singapore are also competing in London in five other sports : athletics, canoeing, gymnastics, shooting and weightlifting.

This mascot Wenlock, as well as the Paralympic Games mascot, Mandeville, represent the last two drops of steel that were used to build the Olympic Stadium in London. They have the particularity of having only one eye and a yellow light on the head, a special wink to London taxis...
Since its first participation at the Olympic Games in 1948 (already organized in London !), Singapore has won four medals : silver in 1960 (weightlifting), silver in 2008 (table tennis, women's team) and two times bronze in 2012 (table tennis, women's team and single).
The table tennis player, Feng Tianwei, flag bearer in London at the opening ceremony, has won three Olympic medals between the games in 2008 and these one in 2012 !
To note that Singapore has participated in the games of 1964 under the colors of Malaysia and for the first time as an independent country at the Olympic games of 1968.
