Garibaldi - Emission commune Italie/Saint-Marin

Garibaldi - Italy/San Marino joint stamp issue

Giuseppe Garibaldi (1807-1882), general and politician, is considered, with Giuseppe Mazzini, Camillo Cavour and King Victor Emmanuel II, as one of the Fathers of the Italian motherland and as one of the protagonists of the country's unification in 1861.
To celebrate the 150th anniversary of this Italian unification, the two postal administrations of San Marino and Italy have issued on June 4, 2011, a joint souvenir sheet (€ 1.50) dedicated to Garibaldi and in particular to his stay in San Marino on July 31, 1949, while fleeing Rome (fall of the Roman Republic) and the French and Austrian troops.

I was very lucky to receive the two covers above and below respectively franked with the souvenir sheet of San Marino and the Italian version.
Thank you very much Matteo :-)

The first letter above was mailed on March 9, 2012 from Fiorentino, one of nine municipalities of the Republic of San Marino.
This stamp allows also to remind us the active participation of San Marino, hosting illustrious Italian exiles, in the Risorgimento movement that led to the unification of neighboring Italy in 1861.
Garibaldi, with his wife Anita (also shown on this stamp) and 1,500 men, found thus refuge in San Marino after the events of 1849.

The Italian version of this miniature sheet appears on the other letter above mailed on November 16, 2011 from the city of Brescia.
This joint issue also commemorates the 150th anniversary of the honorary citizenship bestowed on Garibaldi by the Republic of San Marino (on April 24, 1861 exactly). Garibaldi had expressed at the time his great pride and gratitude "to be a citizen of such a virtuous republic"...
One of the three towers of San Marino, Guaita, the oldest (11th century) and the most famous one built on Mount Titano, is also depicted to the left on this stamp.
