Alliance des Civilisations en Espagne

Alliance of Civilizations in Spain

Merci beaucoup Luis :-)
At the initiative of Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Zapatero, a program called "Alliance of Civilizations" was adopted by the United Nations in April 2007.
This initiative, which aims to reduce the gap, prejudice and misunderstanding between Islamic and Western societies, is largely supported by the Spanish and Turkish governments, which have pledged to create a fund to finance the work of this Alliance.
So it's rather logical that the postal administrations of Turkey and Spain have issued, on October 18, 2010, an interesting joint souvenir sheet about this theme.
It's this numbered sheet (52,639/310,000) that appears on the splendid registered letter below mailed on May 28, 2011 from the city of Alicante. Thank you very much Luis :-)

The margins of this sheet symbolize this "bridge" between civilizations, in particular between Spain and Turkey, featured by their flags on a globe.
The two stamps (€ 0.64 each) part of this sheet evoke the collegiate church of Santa María la Mayor (12th century) in the town of Toro (Province of Zamora) in north-western Spain.
The other stamp of the sheet depicts the Ortaköy Mosque (1854-1855) located in Istanbul on the Bosphorus, near a famous bridge opened in 1973.
Luis has used two other stamps including one (€ 0.78) issued on October 11, 2010 as part of the UPAEP series having the "national symbols" for theme. This stamp depicts a ribbon in the colors of the national flag drawing the contours of Spain with the arms in the center.
The last stamp to the right (€ 2.21) was issued on April 18, 2005 to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of writer, diplomat and politician Juan Valera (1824-1905). His portrait by the painter Enrique Romero de Torres is reproduced on this nice engraved stamp.
