100 ans d'aviation à Singapour

100 Years of Aviation in Singapore

Merci beaucoup Terence :-)
On March 16, 1911, the Belgian aviator Josef Christiaens took off aboard a British biplane "Bristol Box Kite" during a racecourse at Farrer Park.
This day marks the official beginning of aviation in Singapore and to commemorate this centenary, the SingPost has issued 100 years after the day, an interesting series of five stamps (designed by Chua Ban Har) devoted to milestones that occurred during this century.
This series appears on the beautiful official FDC below, with (icing on the cake !) two special postmarks from the Changi International Airport's post office, one of which evoking its famous control tower. Thank you very much Terence :-)

The first stamp to the left (1st Local rate) is featuring this event of March 16, 1911. A Fokker F-7A at Seletar Airport (45c), an Airspeed Consul at Kallang Airport (65c), an American fighter F-15SG at the Paya Lebar Air Base (80c) and an Airbus A380 of the national carrier Singapore Airlines (that made the first commercial flight of the A380 in 2007) at Changi Airport, complete this series.
The shadows of jubilant characters at different times are included at the bottom of each stamp. To note also that, on the three stamps in the middle, the word "cents" replaces the letter "c" usually used on stamps from Singapore ??
Finally, the logo of this centennial of local aviation (designed by students from the Singapore Polytechnic's School of Design) appears in the bottom left on this envelope. Made of arrows, it depicts the infinity sign, symbol of the limitless opportunities in aviation...

Tlemcen, capitale de la culture islamique

Tlemcen, Capital of Islamic Culture

The Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) has designated the Algerian city of Tlemcen as the capital of Islamic culture in 2011, for the Arab region.
Two other regions of the Islamic world are also honored each year, Jakarta (Indonesia) for the Asian region and Conakry (Guinea) for the African region also in 2011.
It's thus the first time that a city of Algeria is declared capital of Islamic culture (since 2005) by ISESCO, that brings together some fifty member countries of the Organization of Islamic Conference.

It was well worth the issue of two commemorative stamps devoted to the rich cultural heritage of Tlemcen, the "Pearl of Maghreb", located in north-western Algeria, near the Moroccan border.
I was very lucky to receive the beautiful "first day" souvenir (dated February 15, 2011) above with the postmark issued at Tlemcen, the town where Omar is living. Thank you very much my friend :-)
This cultural event will thus allow to know much better the culture and crafts of this city (Diwane and Andalusian music, folk dances, Arabic calligraphy, decorative arts...) but also its architectural treasures (mosques of the old medina, enceinte...).
The 15 Dinars stamp above is depicting the minaret of the Mansoura Mosque built during the reign of Merinid Sultan Abu Yaqub (13th century).
The other stamp (20 Dinars) features a finely crafted door knocker from the Sidi Boumedienne Mosque (14th century).
To note that the Post of Algeria had already issued in 2007 a set of stamps devoted to Algiers, the capital of Arab culture, designated then by Arab member countries of UNESCO...

Le peintre Jean Bazaine en France

Painter Jean Bazaine in France

Peintures, mosaïques, tapisseries, vitraux, dessins, fresques murales...
Paintings, mosaics, tapestries, stained glass, drawings, murals... French avant-garde artist Jean Bazaine (1904-2001), a figure of the modern School of Paris ("École de Paris"), has used many support to sustain his characteristic non-figurative style.
The French Post has chosen to pay tribute to this major artist of the 20th century by reproducing a colorful painting entitled "Plongée" (1984), part of the collections of the Pompidou Center in Paris, on a stamp (€ 0.87) issued in general sale on March 21, 2011.
This theme of water and light has indeed fascinated Jean Bazaine and his works.

I was very lucky to receive the "First Day" souvenir of March 18, 2011 above, with a postmark issued in Paris (at the "Carré d'Encre" as usually) featuring the artist's signature. Thank you very much Roland :-)
To note that it's the self-adhesive version of this stamp that appears on this cover, the French Post having issued this stamp both in gummed (2,000,000 copies) and self-adhesive (148,920 copies) versions, which is more and more often the case...
The self-adhesive versions of some of the French stamps were until now issued mainly for companies (through a dedicated website) but it seems that they are now offered to the public (only during these preview sales or also available in the post offices ?).

Un "exemple pour l'humanité" en Turquie

An "exemplary attitude for humanity" in Turkey

Merci beaucoup Vural :-)
The diplomat Namık Kemal Yolga (1914-2001) was vice-consul at the Turkish Embassy in France in 1940 under the Vichy regime during WW II.
The Turkish Post has dedicated a stamp, issued on October 20, 2009, in its series "An exemplary attitude for humanity" to remind his decisive role when he rescued thousands of Jews from deportation by granting them a Turkish passport.
It is the portrait of this "Turkish Schindler" that is featured on the left's stamp on the cover below mailed on March 11 (?), 2011 from the town of Nazilli (western country).
Thank you very much Vural :-)

The background of this stamp refering to the deportation of Jews by train to concentration camps...
The other stamp to the right is part of a series of six stamps, issued on May 3, 2007, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the creation of the Fenerbahçe Sports Club in Istanbul.
The Fenerbahçe football team is the best known but this club also includes important basketball, volleyball, swimming teams...
I don't really know exactly what is featured on this stamp ? Maybe the meeting of the three personalities (Ziya Songülen, Ayetullah Bey et Enver Necip Okaner) who founded the club in 1907 ?
To note finally that since January 2009, the stamps issued by the Turkish Post mention only nominal values in kuruş (instead of "yeni kuruş" referring to the new Turkish lira in circulation since 2005)...

Congrès "Philatélie et Liberté"

"Philately and Liberty" Congress

On March 12 and 13, 2011, the Philatelic Association of the city of Boulogne-Billancourt organized this year the 29th Regional Congress of the Parisian Region's Philatelic Associations (GAPHIL), in the salons of the town hall.
The theme of this congress was "Philately and Liberty" with the Statue of Liberty ("Liberty Enlightening the World") in the spotlight at the occasion of the 125th anniversary of its inauguration in New York.

But what is the link between this statue and the town of Boulogne-Billancourt ??
It's indeed in this city that the French sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi has designed, among others, the head of the "Liberty Enlightening the World" statue !
The molding of this head is moreover today part of the collections of the Museum of the 30's in this city.
Therefore normal that the special cancellation issued during this Congress was featuring the head of this statue !
It's this postmark that appears on the letter above mailed from this philatelic event. Thank you very much Pierre :-)
I've already mentioned in a previous post the stamp used above (Élise Deroche) part of a series of six "Pioneers of Aviation" stamps issued on October 18, 2010.
To note also that the Philatelic Association of Boulogne-Billancourt has also issued a personalized stamps ("MonTimbraMoi") depicting the molding of that same Liberty's head.

1er courrier des îles Chagos !

First cover from Chagos Islands !

It is with great pleasure that I'm sharing with you today this very special letter, the first one received from Diego Garcia, an atoll being part of the Chagos Archipelago, forming the British Indian Ocean Territory (Biot) !
This British overseas territory issues its own stamps since 1968 (with an interruption between 1976 and 1990).
This cover was mailed on February 24, 2011 from Diego Garcia, the only atoll in the territory to be inhabited (population 4,000) with the presence of a U.S. military base...

To note the impressive bottom left's postmark of the local post office on this envelope, depicting the coat of arms of the Biot (approved in 1990) with two sea turtles...
The two stamps (27p each) are part of a series of five stamps issued on April 1, 2008 to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the founding of the British RAF (Royal Air Force).
This series is featuring some important aircrafts of the RAF used during these last 90 years, in particular a "Avro 504" (to the left), a biplane that was used during World War I and a "de Havilland Mosquito" (to the right), a fast bomber used mainly during World War II.
Thank you in advance to the mysterious sender of this great cover (Adan10 ?) to give me your address in order to send you a nice cover from France !

Scoutisme en République Tchèque

The European Postal Association PostEurop had chosen the theme of Scouting in 2007 concerning EUROPA stamps, to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Scouting movement by Englishman Sir Robert Baden-Powell.
The Czech Post had issued a single EUROPA stamp (CZK 11.00), on May 9, 2007, designed by Jirí Petrácek and engraved by Jaroslav Tvrdon.

This EUROPA stamp appears, as an additional value, on the postcard above mailed on March 2, 2011 from Prague, the Czech capital.
Thank you very much François :-)

This stamp evokes a boys and girls scouting camp with in particular a typically Czech element (dating from 1913) of the scout movement : tents with wooden substructures.
Scouting appeared officially in the country in 1911 for boys and 1915 for girls.
The prepaid card above, issued on May 31, 2006 (print run : 6,500), is devoted to the wall fresco of the main post office of Prague. The printed stamp (CZK 10.00) is featuring a stylized lime-tree leaf probably to remind us that the Small-leaved Lime (Tilia cordata) is the national tree of the country...

AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 en Malaisie

AFF Suzuki Cup 2010 in Malaysia

Merci beaucoup Kkkhor :-)
For the first time in its history, the football team of Malaysia has won the AFF Suzuki Cup 2010, the ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) Football Championship !
The Malaysian Post has commemorated this victory by issuing a set of two stamps (60 sen each), on February 28, 2011, depicting respectively the gold medal and the Suzuki Cup of the winners.
This series appears on the official FDC below with postmark (evoking a football) issued in Ipoh. Thank you very much Kkkhor :-)

The 8th edition of this Suzuki Cup 2010 (not to be confused with a motorcycle race !) was organized from 1 to December 29, 2010 jointly by Indonesia and Vietnam.
The Malaysian team has however been fortunate to play the first leg of its semi-finals and finals at home in Kuala Lumpur ?
Eight teams (from the 10 ASEAN member countries), Vietnam, Philippines, Singapore, Myanmar, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Laos, participated in this competition thus won by Malaysia who defeated Indonesia after the two legs of the final.
To note that East Timor was allowed to participate in the preliminary round without being a member of ASEAN...
The 2012 edition of this AFF Suzuki Cup will be held in Malaysia and Thailand.

Kkkhor has completed his postage on the back of this envelope with two stamps part of the "Birds" definitive series, already mentioned on this blog, and two ATM self-adhesive stamps (Frama labels), issued on November 18, 2009, with a value of 10 sen.
As a reminder, the number ("001" and "002" here) of the machine having distributed these ATM stamps is written at the beginning of the 13 digits-serial number included under the denomination, to the right.
The 6 next digits indicate the date of issue ("210410" and "301110" here) and the last 4 digits indicate the order of issue of the stamps on those days.
Finally, these (PAM) machines are delivering five basic values : 30, 40, 50, 100 and 200 sen but it's possible to print other values, with a minimum allowable value of 10 sen.

Karel Hynek Mácha en République tchèque

The graphic designer Jan Kavan and engraver Václav Fajt have designed a beautiful souvenir sheet issued in 2010 (March 10) devoted to the bicentenary of the birth of the great Czech Romantic author Karel Hynek Mácha (1810-1836).
This sheet (mixed offset/intaglio printing) appears on the nice cover below mailed on March 1, 2011 from Prague, the Czech capital.
Thank you very much François :-)

Despite his short life (26 years only), Karel Hynek Mácha has left an important work inspired by nature (in particular his famous epic poem "Máj") and by major authors (Shakespeare, Goethe...).

The stamp included in this sheet is featuring a portrait of the poet seeming to contemplate the region of Bezděz (northern part of the country) and its Gothic castle in particular. This region has indeed deeply influenced Karel Hynek Mácha (and also the composer Smetana). The lake we guess in the top left margin was moreover named after him !
François was kind enough to cancel his letter with two special cancellations issued in March 2011 by the Czech Post : the one affixed on the stamp refers to the Czech stamp engraving tradition and the other one (in circulation from March 1 to March 18, 2011) evokes the election of the most beautiful Czech stamp issued in 2010 ("Nejkrásnější česká poštovní známka roku 2010").

Hockey sur gazon en Pologne

Field Hockey in Poland

Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)
The Polish Post has issued, on February 4, 2011, a special stamp dedicated to field hockey ("Hokej na trawie"), a sport rarely honored in France...
This stamp (PLN 2.40), featuring an action game with a Polish athlete, appears on the official FDC below with FDC cancellation from the city of Poznan.
Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

This stamp has in fact been issued at the occasion of the Field Hockey Indoor World Cup held in Poznan from 8 to 13 February 2011.
Curiously, no mention of this competition on the stamp or the envelope (with the logo of the Polish Field Hockey Association at the top left)...
The Polish men's team finished this competition at the 2nd place (1st place for Germany) and women's team in 5th place (an event also won by Germany), not bad !
France is currently ranked 17th (male) and 25th (women) in the rankings of the International Hockey Federation...

Marke Individuell en Allemagne

Marke Individuell in Germany

A short post to share with you this interesting letter mailed on February 23, 2011 from the German city of Mülheim an der Ruhr. Thank you very much Igor :-)
Igor has used the online "Marke Individuell" service of the Deutsche Post allowing to design his own stamps with a picture chosen.
This service seems to concern companies that wish, through this service, to advertise a product by example...

Igor has chosen an illustration of an old postcard to design this special stamp above (€ 0.55).
This walrus in the middle of the ice indeed appeared on a postcard carried aboard the ship "Fram" (or the "Maud" ?) during the last expeditions of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen in the North Pole region. The word "Polhavet" refers to the Arctic Ocean in Norwegian or Danish.
It's this postcard with the signature of Amundsen and cancellations referring to Polhavet that is reproduced to the left on the envelope.
The postmark to the right (partial view) mentions the year 1918 during Amundsen's Northeast Passage. But why another postmark dating from 1924 has also been applied ??

Bal du Rat Mort en Belgique

"Dead Rat's Ball" in Belgium

Merci beaucoup Thomas :-)
Just 150 years ago, the "Royal Cercle Coecilia" was created by members of the bourgeoisie of the Belgian city of Ostend, a philanthropic association devoted then to culture and music.
This Cercle Coecilia is at the origin of the now famous "Bal du Rat Mort" ("Dead Rat's Ball") held annually since 1896 at the Ostend's Casino.
The Belgian Post ("bpost") has commemorated the 150th anniversary of the Royal Cercle Coecilia by issuing a special postage stamp devoted to the Bal du Rat Mort.
It's this stamp that appears below to the left on this nice cover mailed during the preview sale of this stamp, on March 5, 2011, at the City Hall of Ostend.
Thank you very much Thomas :-)

This stamp reproduces a poster created in 1931 by the expressionist and avant-garde Belgian painter James Ensor (1860-1949), himself a member of the Cercle Coecilia and bon vivant !
The 2011 edition of this carnival of the "Bal du Rat Mort" took place yesterday (March 12) at the Ostend's Casino as usually.
To note also the interesting preview sale's postmark featuring a portrait of James Ensor from a lithograph by the artist entitled "Self Portrait with demons" (1898), kept at the MoMA in New York.
Thomas has used another stamp (booklet's self-adhesive version), issued on November 17, 2006, devoted to the painting Group CoBrA (for "Copenhagen-Brussels-Amsterdam") advocating then spontaneity and naturalness.
A drawing dating from 1950 by Belgian artist Pierre Alechinsky (born 1927), a prominent member of this Group, is reproduced on this stamp : "Nouvelle peau" ("New Skin").
This stamp (gummed version) made up, with a 2nd stamp reproducing a work by Danish Asger Jorn, a joint issue with Denmark.
To note finally that Pierre Alechinsky has also designed two stamps (1985 and 1992) for the French Post.

Pororo the Little Penguin in Korea

For its first series issued in 2011, the Korea Post has decided to start a new four years cycle devoted to "Made in Korea" animated characters.
The animated series "Pororo the Little Penguin" is honored for this first part, issued on February 22, 2011, through the impressive sheet containing 10 self-adhesive stamps below.
Thank you very much Ji-Ho for this beautiful registered cover with special postmarks dated February 26, 2011 issued in Busan :-)

The inevitable unfortunately happened with this kind of issue printed on glossy paper : the ink of postmarks (featuring Pororo) has run...
Ten of the main characters of this animated series, created in 2003 by Cho Jong and produced by the Korean animation company ADV Films, are included in this series above.
This cartoon has since been exported to over 110 countries including France.
This souvenir sheet also has the particularity of including several stickers, including one in the upper right depicting all the characters around a plane !

Ji-Ho was kind enough to send me also the following five letters each franked with two stamps of this series, also including different stickers !
Eddy, a little intelligent and inventive red fox dreaming of becoming a great scientist, appears on the stamp above to the left.
The other stamp depicts Poby (the largest character part of this series), a polar bear with a big heart who enjoys fishing and photography.

Pororo, a little blue penguin wearing aviator cap and big round aviator goggles, is featured above to the left. Pororo, who tries to fly, is engaged in many jokes with his friends living all in the snowy village of Porong Porong Forest.
Pororo lives in a house along with Crong, a little green dinosaur who often causes trouble, depicted on the stamp above to the right.

Petty, a bright and athletic female penguin, is pictured above to the left. In the Season 2 of this animated series, Pororo develops a crush on her, making jealous Loopy, the little beaver below...
The jellyfish-like twin aliens, Pipi and Popo, two very curious characters living in a flying saucer, appear on the same stamp above to the right.

Loopy, a shy and sensitive female beaver, enjoying cooking and baking, is represented on the stamp above on the right and also on the huge sticker to the left with all her friends part of this series.
The little wayward hummingbird, Harry, who loves to sing (which does not necessarily please to everyone !) is featured above to the left.

The last two characters of this series, TongTong and Rody, are represented on the two stamps above.
Tongtong is a little dragon magician, living inside a volcano, that has the particularity of becoming much bigger when flying, often causes trouble for his friends with his more or less under control's magic acts...
Rody is a yellow robot, created by red fox Eddy, with cat ears, a permanent smile and stretch arms and legs.

On the other side of each of these five letters, Ji-Ho has added eight (10 won) definitive stamps, issued on March 6, 2003, featuring the national Korean flag "Taegeukgi".
This stamp was issued to replace the previous definitive stamp into circulation since April 1993, representing this same flag.
Korea Post has found nothing wrong with applying of the "Pororo" special postmark on these stamps issued yet eight years ago...

20 ans du Groupe de Visegrád

20 Years of the Visegrád Group

Merci beaucoup Robert :-)
On the initiative of Slovakia, currently chairing this informal organization (until June 2011), the postal administrations of the four countries (Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Poland), part of the Visegrad Group have issued, on February 11, 2011, a joint stamp to commemorate the 20th anniversary of its establishment.
I was very lucky to receive the covers below from these four countries, each franked with this joint stamp !!!
The version of the Slovak Post (€ 0.90) appears on the first letter below mailed on February 16, 2011 in Bratislava. Thank you very much Robert :-)

I will speak about the illustration of this joint stamp further down on this post.
Robert has completed his postage above with the first two stamps issued by the Slovak Post in 2011. The € 0.80 stamp, issued on January 17, 2011, is devoted to the 2011 International Year of Chemistry (IYC 2011) with these two molecules of water and carbon dioxide interacting in the process of photosynthesis. To note the attached coupon reproducing the official logo of this IYC 2011.
The last stamp (€ 0.70), issued on January 28, 2011, completes this splendid definitive series devoted to religious art. A detail of the stone high altar of the Gothic Church of St. George at Svätý Jur (near Bratislava) is featured here (St. George slaying the dragon).

But let's speak now about this joint issue. The postal administrations of the four countries have all issued this stamp in a sheet of 8 stamps (4 horizontal bands of 2 stamps) with the words "20 Years of the Visegrad Group", in the language of the country, in the top margin and the names of the four countries (in English !) in the bottom margin. The flags of the four countries are also included in the two vertical margins on the right and left.
Here is above the lower band of this sheet issued by the Hungarian Post. Thank you very much Bertalan for this letter mailed on February 28, 2011 from the city of Esztergom :-)

The Czech version of this stamp (with the Czech flag in the margin !) appears on the other cover above mailed on March 7, 2011 from the town of Kroměříž.
Thank you very much Milan :-)

This Visegrad Group was therefore established in 1991 during a summit of heads of state of Czechoslovakia, Poland and Hungary held in the Hungarian town of Visegrad. The purpose of this informal organization was then to develop cooperation between these three countries (which became four in 1993 after the partition of Czechoslovakia) to accelerate the process of European integration and later integration into NATO.

Merci beaucoup Kazimierz :-)
Here is above the stamp issued by the Polish Post, on this interesting official FDC with the map of Europe to the left allowing to locate (red dots) the respective capitals of the four countries (Budapest, Bratislava, Prague and Warsaw from south to north).
The FDC postmark is also designed from the respective geographic locations of these four capitals.
Thank you very much Kazimierz :-)

Kazimierz was kind enough to send me also, on February 24, 2011, the four other envelopes above each stamped with this same joint stamp with the four different flags attached !
The two stamps at the top form the first band of the sheet of 8 stamps including the words "20. Rocznica Utworzenia Grupy Wyszehradzkiej" in the top margin.
This Visegrad Group is also called Visegrád 4 or V4, what the Hungarian designer Barnabás Baticz has symbolized on this stamp via these two hands.
The European Union is evoked on the left hand and the different colors on the four member countries' flags are depicted on the 4 fingers of the right hand. The number "20" is also included on the two palms.

Relations diplomatiques au Brésil

Diplomatic relations in Brazil

The Brazilian Post has continued in 2010 its many sets of stamps devoted to diplomatic relations between Brazil and many countries around the world. Very few of these stamps have been jointly issued by the concerned countries, for example with Syria in 2010.
I've already mentioned in a previous post the souvenir sheet devoted to Italy (Amerigo Vespucci). Four other countries were honored in 2010 : Malawi, Egypt, Zambia and Syria (I will speak about this issue in a future post).

The Brazilian Post has put into circulation in 2010, for this occasion, some special envelopes including puzzle pieces with the colors of these five countries and Brazil.
I was very lucky to receive two of these envelopes with the series devoted to diplomatic relations with Zambia (see above) and Egypt (see below).
Thank you very much Marcelo :-)
The impressive series of six se-tenant stamps above, issued on October 24, 2010, features the "Big Five" of the African savannah and of Zambia in particular : Leopard (Panthera pardus), Lion (Panthera leo), African Buffalo (Syncerus caffer), Black Rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis) and African Elephant (Loxodonta africana).
To note that the Latin names of these five mammals are included in micro letters on each animal !
The sixth stamp of the series depicts a part of the famous Victoria Falls (on the Zambezi River) located on the border between Zambia and Zimbabwe.

To evoke its relations with Egypt, the Brazilian Post has chosen the impressive great Temple of Abu Simbel built in Upper Egypt during the reign of Pharaoh Ramesses II.
This temple is famous for having been moved between 1963 and 1968, under the patronage of UNESCO, after the construction of the Aswan Dam.
To note the interesting FDC postmark (July 22, 2010) suggesting a pyramid !
Paraguay, Ukraine, Mexico, Italy (a 2nd time after 2010, probably to commemorate the Year of Italy in Brazil...), Serbia, Qatar and Belgium will be honored in 2011.

Régions touristiques montagneuses en Malaisie

Highland Tourist Spots in Malaysia

Merci beaucoup Kkkhor :-)
To escape the hot and humid tropical climate oberved on the majority of the country, many Malaysians but also foreign tourists are traveling to the most mountainous regions of the country to find a refreshing air and enjoy some beautiful spots !
This is to these Highland tourist places ("Pelancongan tanah tinggi" in Malay) that the Malaysian Post has devoted a new set of four stamps issued on February 21, 2011
It is this nice set that appears on the official FDC below with a FDC postmark from the city of Ipoh (State of Perak). Thank you very much Kkkhor :-)

The 50 sen stamp depicts the tourist train giving access to the top of Penang Hill ("Bukit Bendera"), 830 meters high, located 6 km from George Town (State of Pulau Pinang).
The "Cameron Highlands" (60 sen stamp) are one of the most popular highland retreats (1500 meters) in Malaysia (State of Pahang), with its typical tea plantations, strawberry farms, rose gardens and its waterfalls.
The 90 sen stamp evokes the cable-car that allows access to the top of the mountain Gunung Mat Cincang, located in the northeast of the Langkawi Island (State of Kedah) where a splendid view over the islands and neighboring Thailand is offered to tourists.
The agricultural region of Kundasang, near the Kinabalu National Park (State of Sabah, Borneo) is featured on the last stamp (RM 1.00). Cabbage, but also carrots, tomatoes, salad are the main vegetables cultivated in this place.

Fête du Timbre 2011 en France... suite

New cover from the 2011 Stamp Festival in France

I was very lucky to receive another souvenir from one of the 107 French towns that organized this Stamp Festival 2011 whose theme was the protection of the earth !
Thank you very much Stéphane for this nice illustrated letter sent on February 26, 2011 from the city of Alençon, the Prefecture of the department of Orne (n°61) :-)

Stéphane has used the stamp declined from the Marianne by Beaujard mentioned in my previous post.

Fête du Timbre 2011 en France

2011 Stamp Festival in France

As usual since 1938, the "Fête du Timbre" ("Stamp Festival") took place throughout France (in 107 cities exactly) on 26 and 27 February 2011.
On this occasion, the French Post has issued a series of more or less commemorative stamps : a souvenir sheet (€ 2.00 stamp), a stamp declined from Beaujard's Marianne, an eco-booklet of 12 stamps and finally a "gadget" collector of 10 personalized stamps (with 5 stamps including seeds ready to plant...).
After the protection of water in 2010, the theme chosen this year was the protection of the earth. This cycle of four years devoted to sustainable development will therefore continue in 2012 (the Stamp Festival will be held in October) and 2013...

This Stamp Festival was held in my hometown of Lyon and here is above the stamp souvenir I sent to myself :-)
I really like the simplicity of the special cancellation (without the words "first day of issue") recalling a sunflower.
The stamp in the upper right is part of the recyclable "Earth Mother" booklet composed of 12 different stamps designed on cotton paper (thicker than usual), reproducing illustrations by 9 artists, a fruit tree by Henri Galeron here.

Here is above the flyer devoted to this Stamp Festival held in Lyon in the town hall of the 8th arrondissement.
A good idea this theme of "protecting the Earth", but too bad to notice that the souvenir sheet, the booklet of 12 stamps and the collector were offered to the public packed in blister non-recyclable plastic... Congratulations to the marketing experts of the French Post !!!

I was very lucky to receive two other souvenirs (above and below) mailed from this same Stamp Festival !
The letter above was mailed from the town of Sablé-sur-Sarthe (Sarthe department). Thank you very much to my sister Annabelle for her valuable contribution :-)
The souvenir sheet is reproducing a botanical print entitled "Rubis Strawberry" part of the collections of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle (MNHN) in Paris, designed by painter Alfred Riocreux and engraved by Philibert Picart.
This sheet, with mixed intaglio/offset printing process, has the particularity of being both scented (strawberry of course !) and being printed on both sides (a world first ?).
But hence, this sheet is not gummed on its entire back (only on three vertical stripes)... so difficult to stick properly...

The second cover above was mailed on February 26, 2011 in Paris. Thank you very much Eric :-)
This is the special "Marianne" stamp that appears above including the words "Let's protect the Earth" and a "green" hand on its left part (after waves last year).
Unfortunately, this letter was massacred with this mechanical cancellation affixed on the same day when it passed through the mail industrial platform ("PIC" in French) of Gonesse (25635A) in the Paris region...
