100 ans de la République de Chine (Taïwan)

100th Anniversary of the Founding of the Republic of China (Taiwan)

The year 2011 (the year "100" in the local calendar) is a great year of celebrations in Taiwan ! The Republic of China commemorates indeed the 100th anniversary of its foundation, on October 10, 1911, following the overthrow of the Qing Dynasty and its last emperor Pu Yi...
On December 29, 1911, Sun Yat-sen became the first President of the Republic of China, often viewed as the first ever republic established in Asia.
His successor, Chiang Kai-shek, will retreat on the island of Taiwan with his Nationalist troops from 1949, after the takeover of mainland China by the communist troops of Mao...

Thank you very much Wu Yi Wei for this beautiful illustrated envelope above, mailed on January 31, 2011 (from Kaohsiung ?), referring to the 100th birthday of President Chiang Kai-shek (1887-1975) with his portrait in front of the national flag of Taiwan (to the left).
The three small "flags" stamps are part of the definitive series issued from 1978 to 1981. To note that the NT$ 9.00 stamp (with also the NT$ 6.00) above has been overprinted on July 9, 1986 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the start of the Northward Expedition when Chiang Kai-shek, the then Leader of Kuomintang and of the National Revolutionary Army, led an armed offensive against the warlords who controlled much of China.
The NT$ 7.00 stamp is part of a series of three stamps issued on June 18, 1980, devoted to airmail transport, with a plane of China Airlines here.
The last stamp above (NT$ 2.00) is part of a series of three stamps issued on April 5, 1985, commemorating the 10th anniversary of the death of Chiang Kai-shek. This stamp features the main gate of the National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall, inaugurated in Taipei in 1980.

To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China, the Central Bank of Taiwan has released, on January 6, 2011, a special commemorative NT$ 100 banknote (approx. € 2.53).
Wu Wei Yi was kind enough to send me one of these banknotes above !
A portrait of President Sun Yat-sen is featured on the obverse of this note above.

A view of the Chung-Shan Building, part of the Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hall complex, completed in Taipei in 1966, is depicted on the other side of this banknote above.
Compared to the classic NT$ 100 banknote, a special mention was added in the lower left part meaning "In celebration of the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Republic of China".
