Timbres de Noël en Moldavie

Christmas stamps from Moldova

As usual, the Moldovan Post has issued, on December 7, 2010, a special series consisting of a stamp and a souvenir sheet, devoted to Christmas and New Year ("La mulţi ani !" mentioned in the upper margin of the sheet).
This series appears on the very nice FDC below with FDC cancellation issued in the Moldovan capital, Chişinău. Thank you very much Sergio :-)
The Christmas stamp below to the left (L 1.20, issued in sheets of 10 stamps) features the arrival of an angel with a gift for a little boy waiting in front of his window...

The same designer of this Christmas stamp, Elena Karachentseva, has also created the beautiful souvenir sheet (L 5.40 stamp) part of this series, above to the right.
This sheet depicts the Cathedral of the Nativity of Chişinău in the snow. You'll probably recognize the small bullfinch and goldfinch featured in the lower right margin :)
This cathedral, considered as one of the major buildings of the 19th century (classical Russian style) of the Moldovan capital, was consecrated on October 1836. Located in the central park of the city, it has the particularity of being composed of two distinct parts : the cathedral and the bell tower.

This same souvenir sheet is included on the other special cover above also sent from Chişinău on 01/01/11 (a date sought by some stamp fans !).
To note the pretty special postmark issued by the Post of Moldova, from December 25 to January 7, to celebrate the New Year.
This envelope, originally issued in 2009, shows a view of this same cathedral to the left.
This complex was severely affected during the bombing of June 1941 and restored in 1956. Then in 1962 the communist authorities destroyed the bell tower and the cathedral was converted into a showroom...
The cathedral was consecrated again in 1996 and the bell tower rebuilt in 1997.

This cathedral is a "star" of the Moldovan philately since it already appeared on stamps issued in 1997 (Easter), 2001 (10 years of independence, Christmas), 2003 (10 years of EUROPA issues) and 2009 (stamp with personalized coupon).
The United Nations have declared 2011 as International Year of Forests. The theme of forests has also been chosen by the PostEurop organization for the EUROPA stamps issued this year.
Many other postal administrations outside Europe will also commemorate this Year of Forests (United Nations, Canada...).
By waiting its EUROPA series, the Moldovan Post has issued the special cancellation, applied to the other side of this letter above, devoted to this International Year of Forests ("Anul Internaţional al Pădurilor").
