Volcan Eyjafjallajökull... le retour !

Eyjafjallajökull volcano is back !

On March 20, 2010, the volcano Eyjafjöll located beneath the ice cap Eyjafjallajökull (southern Iceland) enters in eruption. Some impressive lava flows then appear on Fimmvörðuháls pass, until April 12, 2010...
But from April 14, the activity of the volcano entered in a second phase and the magma rised again in the summit crater of the south-west part of the glacier Eyjafjallajökull. Huge clouds of ash were dispersed in the atmosphere throughout Europe, causing massive disruptions in air travel, the largest since the end of the second world war, until April 20, 2010...
Iceland was thus in the spotlight and for once, no connection with the massive financial crisis gripping the country !

The Icelandic Post has issued on July 22, 2010, a very special series of three stamps (not initially scheduled of course !) devoted to this volcanic eruption.
I was very lucky to receive the official FDC above concerning this issue. Thank you so much Benedikt :-)
These three stamps are all issued with permanent values : local letter up to 50g (75 ISK), letter up to 50g to Europe (165 ISK) and letter up to 50g to the rest of the world (220 ISK) from left to right.
This beautiful series, printed by the Dutch Joh. Enschedé, includes some parts silkscreen printed with very fine-grained trachyandesite ash (3 microns) of this volcanic eruption, collected on April 17, 2010 !
This eruption's second phase resulted in an estimated 250 million cubic meters of ash with a cloud that rose to a height of 9 km. Do not forget that this eruption has also caused many ravages in Iceland with floods, hundreds of families evacuated, ash-covered pasture...
A priori, letters franked with these stamps in Iceland have the authorization to travel by plane ;-)
