Splendeurs architecturales de l'Inde

Architectural Splendours of India

Merci beaucoup Sujay :-)
The Ninth Aga Khan Award for Architecture's cycle, covering the years 2002, 2003 and 2004, ended on November 27, 2004 in India, in the Mughal complex of Humayun's Tomb in Delhi in the presence of the Indian Prime Minister, with the announcement of the seven rewarded sites.
This Award was created in 1977 by Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, 49th Imam and spiritual leader of Shia Ismaili Muslims, to enhance understanding and appreciation of Islamic culture in particular expressed through architecture.
India Post has issued on this occasion, on November 28, 2004, a beautiful souvenir sheet of two 1500p stamps, devoted to the Agra Fort (State of Uttar Pradesh).
This sheet is included on the very nice cover below mailed on September 26, 2009 from the town of Hubli (State of Karnataka). Thank you very much Sujay :-)

The Agra Fort, inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983, Mughal monument dating from 16th and 17th century, is a 2.5-km-long powerful fortress of red sandstone built around the imperial city, composed of a great number of magnificent palaces (Jahangiri Mahal, Khas Mahal built in white marble by Shah Jahan in 1637), audience halls (Diwan-i-Khas) and two mosques. Its construction began in 1565 under the reign of Akbar, the 3rd Mughal emperor.
The left stamp on the souvenir sheet above depicts a view of the front of the Khas Mahal, while the other stamp on the right pictures a view of the red surrounding wall (Amar Singh Gate) and the Burj Musamman's octagonal tower, built between 1631 and 1640 by Mughal ruler Shah Jahan.
From this tower, you've a magnificent vue on the white marble Taj Mahal Mausoleum built also by Shaj Jahan from 1631 for his deceased wife Arjumand Bânu Begam.
Sujay had the excellent idea to complete his postage with the stamp depicting the Taj Mahal, issued by India Post on December 16, 2004 !
The last stamp (500p) above was issued on April 29, 2009 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of R. Sankar (1909-1972), freedom fighter, educator, lawyer, journalist, political leader and social reformer, particularly in the ecucation's field.
