Jeux Mondiaux 2009 à Kaohsiung

2009 World Games in Kaohsiung

Climbing, Fistball, cue sports, bowling, orienteering, parachuting, water skiing, frisbee, rugby and sumo are some of the sports being part of the World Games !
These World Games, held every four years since 1981, concerne indeed sports that are not contested in the Olympic Games.
More than 3,000 athletes from a hundred countries participated in the 8th edition of these World Games, held in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung from 16 to 26 July 2009.
On this occasion, the Chunghwa Post has issued on July 16th 2009 a series of two commemorative stamps (NT$ 5.00 and NT$ 12.00) depicting respectively the Kaohsiung Arena (and the two mascots of these games) and the main stadium (and the official logo of these games).

The NT$ 12.00 stamp is included on the nice cover above. Thank you very much George :-)
This 40,000-seat stadium was built specially for these games (rugby, opening and closing ceremonies) and its roof is completely covered with solar panels.
The Post of Taiwan also issued on July 16th 2009 a new model of ATM stamp to announce these World Games and also the ROCUPEX Philatelic Exhibition held in Kaohsiung from 16 to 21 July 2009.
This stamp depicts two famous tourist attractions in Kaohsiung, the Tiger and Dragon pagodas, built in 1976 at the edge of a lake in the Zuoying district.
These two pagodas are also depicted on the special cancellation above dated on July 16th 2009 (98). The other red postmark refers to the ROCUPEX stamp exhibition and its logo.

These ATM stamps were issued in Kaohsiung by eight units of Innovision ATM machines. These machines were programmed to print the nominal values in four different colors (black, blue, green and red) depending on the days and hours. The machine code is also printed at the top right of each ATM stamp.
Thus, the NT$ 5.00 (black) stamp on the first letter above was issued by the machine 103 (initialy located in the Taipei Taan post office) only on July 16th between 11.00 and 22.00 and on July 2Nth between 11.00 and 16.00.
Another example with green printing (NT$ 17.00) above with machine No. 101 (Taipei Xinyi) issued on July 19th between 10.30 and 22.00 and July 21th between 11.00 and 16.00...
Total print run of these labels : 600,000 copies.
By the way, Russia has finished at the first place at these 2009 World Games (47 medals), followed by Italy and China. France was ranked 5th with 38 medals, not so bad !
