16ème Jeux Asiatiques en Chine

16th Asian Games in China

Merci beaucoup Jiang Kang Yuan :-)
After Beijing in 1990, the People's Republic of China will organize the 16th Asian Games in Guangzhou from 12 to 27 November 2010.
The Chinese team has finished first at the last seven editions ahead Japan or Korea, which will organize the 17th Asian Games in Incheon in 2014.
The Post of China has issued on June 30, 2009, a set of two stamps devoted to these 2010 Games, depicting the emblem and mascots.
These two stamps are included on the very interesting FDC below with not less than four different special postmarks and also one more classical from Guangzhou !
Thank you very much Jiang Kang Yuan :-)

The emblem (left stamp) is inspired by the famous statue of the Five Goats located in Guangzhou, in the Yuexiu Gongyuan Park. A legend said that Guangzhou (called "Goat City") was indeed born where five geniuses riding goats brought to men, during a famine, some ears of rice to specify a place for the founding of the city, 2000 years ago...
The other stamp is depicting the five mascots (five goats !) of these Games : Le Yangyang, A Xiang, A He, A Ru and A Yi. The Chinese organizers of these games have adopted the same technique as for the Olympic Games in Beijing : the five names of the mascots put together make the phrase "Xiang He Ru Yi Le Yangyang" ("Peace, Harmony and Great Happiness, with everything going as you wish") !

Two other stamps are included on the other side of this cover above.
The 2.80 yuan stamp is part of a series of four stamps issued on May 5th 2000 devoted to the Taer Tibetan Buddhist monastery (lamasery). Founded in 1560, this monastery is located in Qinghai province in western China (north of Tibet).
The other stamp is part of another set of four stamps issued on May 15th 2004, about Chinese living abroad and their contribution in the development of the country. This stamp is depicting the tropical garden of the Xinglong Overseas Chinese Farm in Wanning (island province of Hainan) where Chinese from Vietnam, Indonesia and other south-eastern countries have resettled.

150 ans des jardins botaniques de Singapour

150 years of Singapore Botanic Gardens

Merci beaucoup Edna :-)
In 1822, the founding father of the city of Singapore and keen naturalist, Sir Stamford Raffles, established the first experimental and botanical garden in the country.
But this is only in 1859 that the botanic gardens at its present site was founded.
The Post of Singapore has commemorated the 150th anniversary of these Botanic Gardens by issuing on June 19th 2009 a beautiful set of four se-tenant stamps and one souvenir sheet.
This sheet is included on the cover below mailed on July 13th 2009.
Thank you very much Edna :-)

Jewels and World Heritage in Korea

After more than one year of collaboration, the three postal administrations of Korea, Mongolia and Kazakhstan have issued a rather nice joint set of three stamps depicting old earrings.
This joint issue symbolizes the close ties between these three countries in particular in the economic, social and cultural fields.
These three stamps were issued on June 12th 2009 by the Korean Post in a nice sheet consisting of three horizontal rows and one vertical row, each with the three se-tenant stamps.
Each stamp was designed by an artist from each country.

One of the three horizontal rows of this sheet is included on the FDC above. Thank you very much Kim :-)
On the left, an earring from Kazakhstan, used by nobles, dating from the 2nd century BC to 1st century AD. Made with gold, turquoise and carnelian, it represents a boar attacking humans (State Central Historic Ethnography Museum).
In the middle, a pair of Korean earrings used by the royal family of the Silla dynasty (5th and 6th century). Very sophisticated, this jewel measuring 8.7 cm was discovered during excavations in the city of Gyeongju and was declared as a national treasure (Museum of Korea).
The pair of earrings of Mongolia was used by the nobility in the 18th and 19th century. Measuring 20 cm, it was designed in gold and silver with turquoise and coral (Mongolian National Historical Museum).

The Jeju volcanic island and lava tubes is the only Korean natural site inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List (since 2007).
The Korean Post has issued on June 26th 2009 a beautiful set of two stamps (mixed offset/intaglio) devoted to this unique site on the Jeju island (18,846 ha), located 85 km south of the Korean peninsula .
These two stamps were issued in sheet of 8 stamps (4 of each) and a souvenir sheet with the two stamps. Two stamps taken from the sheet appear on the pretty FDC above.
They are depicting two of the many lava tubes of the Geomunoreum system (considered as the most remarkable system of this kind in the world) of the island : Yongcheondonggul and Dangcheomuldonggul.
The beautiful landscapes of this island are also marked by the Seongsan Ilchulbong tuff cone or Mount Halla and its lake-filled crater.

Above a third letter mailed on July 13th 2009 from the port city of Busan (South-eastern Korea). Thank you very much Ji-Ho :-)
As in China or Japan, there are many sightseeing cancellations (more than 200) in Korea, available in the post offices close to famous tourist places. This is the case for the nice postmark above depicting the Busan Gwangan suspension bridge (completed in 2002). This cancellation is in use since September 2007 in connection with the issue of the series of four stamps representing Korean bridges, including the Gwangan's one.
The two 200 won and 90 won definitive stamps have been issued respectively on March 26th 2001 and June 5th 2006. They depict a Yeongdeok great crab (Chionoecetes opilio) and a Great tit (Parus major) that is curiously not depicted with a yellow belly, as it's the case in my country ?

Korea is member of the UPU (Universal Postal Union) since January 1, 1900 and so the Korean Post can offer to customers some international reply coupons, like the one above that Ji-Ho was kind enough to send to me :-)
These reply coupons are not sold directly by the UPU but by each postal administration of the member states.
The reply coupon above corresponds to the model called "Beijing No. 2", released in July 2006, with an illustration inspired by the fresco of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo.
This coupon, valid until 31 December 2009, is only including mentions in French, the official language of the UPU, with in particular the name of the issuing country ("Corée (Rép.)" above). Translations into German, English, Arabic, Chinese, Russian and Spanish are included on the other side.
A new model of international reply coupon, entitled "Nairobi", is normally in circulation since July 1, 2009 with an expiry date to December 31, 2013...

Habitats traditionnels en Malaisie

Traditional houses in Malaysia

The Malaysian Post has done things in the grand scale : not less than 16 stamps (50 sen each) have been issued on July 9th 2009 in a very interesting series devoted to traditional houses in the country.
The 13 states forming the federation of Malaysia are represented with three lucky states that were entitled to two stamps (Sabah, Sarawak and Pahang).
These houses, often designed with bamboo, wood and palm trees are part of the architectural heritage of the country, each reflecting the culture and know-how of its different ethnic groups.

Three stamps (se-tenant) of this series are included on the nice FDC above with a very original FDC cancellation from the Ipoh philatelic bureau (state of Perak) with the words "Rumah Tradisional" in Malay.
Thank you very much Kkkhor :-)
The stamp above on the left depicts a typical Malayan house of the state of Selangor, which we can find some very close examples in the neighboring state of Melaka. Built on 12 pillars, the structure is designed from different species of wood and the roof from Rumbia and Nipah palm leaves.
The next stamp shows a typical house of the Dusun tribe, the largest in the state of Sabah (Tuaran District). It is designed from mangrove wood, bamboo and palm.
The last stamp depicts a Kutai house, made of bamboo and palm leaves, built along the river in the state of Perak (Perak Tengah, Hilir Perak and Kuala Kangsar).

Merci beaucoup Siew Lan :-)
I also had the chance to receive four other letters mailed on the date of issue but with classic postmarks from the state of Selangor.
Thank you very much Siew Lan :-)
The two stamps on the left on the first letter above already appeared on the FDC mentioned above.
The third stamp on the right is depicting a house with 12 pillars, characteristic of the Kota Bahru region (state of Kelantan) for over 1,000 years. The design of the roof and carved wooden decorations are largely influenced by nearby Thailand.

The stamp above on the left depicts a Malayan house that can be found in the state of Melaka.

The Limas house, which can be found in Pontian (Johor), is typical with its hall topped by a roof.
The last stamp on the bottom shows a typical long house (Kedah) with its two gables built at both the front and back of the house.

Three new covers from Slovakia

Thank you so much Robert for allowing me once again to evoke these wonderful stamps issued by the Slovak Post through these three new covers mailed in late June from Trnava and Bratislava !
The first letter below makes us discover two masterpieces of Renaissance and Romanesque architecture in Slovakia. The stamp on the right (Sk 22.00) is part of a series of three stamps issued on November 15th 2002 devoted to religious buildings. This one depict the front of the St. Martin Cathedral in Spišská Kapitula (Levoca district, north-eastern country), a small well-preserved ecclesiastical town.

This cathedral was built between the 13th and 15th century in a Romanesque and Gothic style. It houses many tombs of the lords of the nearby Spiš castle and of the Zapolsky family. There are also some very interesting 14th century's frescoes and a famous travertine sculpture of a white lion, depicted on the € 0.50 definitive stamps issued earlier this year.
Spišská Kapitula, and the Spiš castle and its associated cultural monuments, is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List since 1993.
The left stamp is part of a set of two stamps issued on May 19th 2006, depicting Renaissance Slovak belfries. The one above was built in 1659 in Podolínec, in the Prešov region (north-eastern country).

The Sk 14.00 stamp above on the right was issued on May 9th 2003 as part of the EUROPA series devoted to Poster art this year. A poster about the play Don Juan by the French Molière is reproduced here. This stamp is also evoking the Poster Triennial held since 1991 in Trnava. This poster was designed by Vlastislav Rostoka who has twice received the first prize at this triennial.
The stamp in the middle was issued on March 10, 2003 to celebrate Easter. It shows a young girl in traditional costume of the Vajnory region holding a "Lesola" (a twig decorated with painted eggs and ribbons of color), symbolizing spring season.
The small stamp on the left, issued on March 15th 1995, is part of the definitive series about cities of Slovakia. This one depicts the baroque St. Peter and St. Paul Church in Nitra, one of the oldest cities in Slovakia.

An other stamp of the EUROPA series, is included above on the right. Issued on May 5th 1998, it focused on Festivals and national celebrations. I don't exactly know if this stamp referred to a Slovak festival in particular, but the FDC cancellation was held in the village of Starý Tekov, famous for its folk festival (songs and dances).
The Sk 5.50 stamp is part of a set of two stamps issued on February 22th 2001, each depicting women and men's folk costumes of the town of Detva (central region).
The Sk 4.00 stamp was issued on September 3, 1999 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design (VŠVU) in Bratislava.
The last stamp on the left, issued on September 5th 1995, is about the International Biennial of Illustrations of Bratislava (BIB) held since 1967 and devoted to illustrations of books for children and young adults. This stamp reproduces a drawing by the Slovak artist Dušan Kállay who received some Awards at this Biennial in 1973, 1975, 1983 and 1993.

"He has made many personal sacrifices to ensure the workers' right to establish their own organisations. This universal freedom to organise is one of the human rights as defined by the United Nations...
His activities have been characterized by a determination to solve the problems of his country through negotiation and cooperation without resorting to violence...
In an age when peaceful resolution of conflicts is more necessary than ever, his contribution is both an inspiration and an example."

Here is what said the Norwegian committee to explain the award of the Nobel Peace Prize to Lech Wałęsa in October 1983.
The Post of Poland has celebrated the 25th anniversary of this Nobel Prize by issuing in 2008 (when exactly ?) a postcard with a pre-printed stamp reproducing a recent photograph of the famous founder of the "Solidarność" union. The print run of this card is 50,000 copies.
Thank you very much Kazimierz for this interesting card mailed on June 25th 2009 :-)
The photograph at the top left shows without doubt Lech Wałęsa in the early 80's during one of the many strikes of workers in the Gdansk shipyards to denounce the communist dictatorship.
As a reminder, Lech Wałęsa has already been in the spotlight this year with the issue of a souvenir sheet on May 30th 2009 devoted to the 20th anniversary of the first partly free general elections in Poland won by the candidates of the "Solidarność" union. Lech Wałęsa was elected president of Poland one year later...

Les 5 timbres préférés des australiens

Australia's five favourite stamps

Merci beaucoup Ben :-)
As part of the 200 years of postal services in the country, Australia Post has invited Australians to choose their five favourite among 150 stamps issued since 1850 (year of issue of the first stamp in New South Wales), referring to the culture, heritage or major events in the country.
The five lucky elected were the subject of a beautiful set of stamps on stamps, issued on June 26th 2009. They appear on the official FDC below with a FDC cancellation from Sydney.
Thank you very much Ben :-)

The stamp having received the most of votes is the one above on the left, a £2 depicting a Kangaroo on a map of Australia, issued in 1913 and withdrawn from circulation in 1938. This issue was controversial because it did not include a portrait of the British monarch...
The next stamp was issued in 1932 to celebrate the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Nicknamed "Five Bob Bridge", this stamp has become a very emblematic stamp of this country. This bridge has appeared many times on Australian stamps, most recently in 2007 for its 75 years.
The stamp in the upper right was issued in 1946 to commemorate the end of World War II. It depicts a wreath and a seven-pointed star symbolizing the seven Australian states and territories.
The following stamp issued in 1950, is the first stamp of the country representing an aboriginal man, Gwoya Jungarai (1895-1965), nicknamed "One Pound Jimmy", member of the Walbiri tribe.
The last most popular stamp was issued in 1914 and is depicting a kookaburra (or Giant Kingfisher), a mythical bird in Aboriginal culture. This 6d stamp is part of the new series that replaced the "Kangaroo and Map" stamps evoked higher up on this post.

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 26ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXVI

The Post of Romania has issued on March 21th 2009, a souvenir sheet of two stamps as part of the international stamp campaign for the protection of the polar regions and glaciers ("Protejaţi regiunile polare şi gheţarii" in Romanian), initiated by Finland and Chile.
This nice sheet is included on the cover below mailed on July 11, 2009 from the Romanian city of Târgu Mureş in Transylvania.
Thank you very much Simon :-)
Mihai Vamasescu, the designer of the sheet, has chosen to depict an Antarctic polar landscape featuring an Emperor Penguin and some Adelie Penguins.

The left stamp is depicting a closed human eye with a huge tear, the right one showing an interesting evocation of the Antarctic continent that seems to sweat under the effects of global warming... This stamp also indicates that Romania is part of the fifty countries having signed (in 1971) the Antarctic Treaty.
These two stamps also evoke the International Polar Year 2007-2009.
The insignia of this campaign, an stylized ice crystal, is well included on the two stamps and also in the central margin of the souvenir sheet (reverse).
It's worth noting that this sheet was also issued in a limited version of only 1,000 copies (numbered in red from 1 to 1,000), printed on silver foiling with an hologram design.
23,500 other sheets have been printed on normal paper and numbered in black from 1,001 to 24,500. This is the case of the sheet on the letter above, bearing the number 1,435.

Fleurs des prés en Moldavie

Meadow Flowers of Moldova

Merci beaucoup Sergio :-)
On June 18th 2009, the Post of Moldova has issued a beautiful set of three stamps and one souvenir sheet depicting some meadow flowers of the country.
The Moldovan Post has also issued for this occasion a series of postcards with a close-up view of each species of flowers shown on the stamps.
Here is an example below with the postcard devoted to the Spring Pheasant's Eye ("Ruşcuţa-de-primăvară" in Moldovan, "Adonis vernalis L." in Latin) with the associated L 1.50 stamp withe the nice FDC cancellation from Chişinău on which are depicted the four species of flowers of the series.
Total print run of each postcard : 3,000.
Thank you very much Sergio :-)

Sergio has added a L 1.00 stamp (about which I've already spoken) part of the definitive series of four stamps issued on February 19th 2008, depicting some pits from different Moldavan villages.
This stamp was cancelled with a classic postmark from Chişinău 12 at the same date of June 18th 2009. It's worth noting the third postmark dated June 19th with this most enigmatic mention : "CPTP SPS" ?
But let's speak again about this Spring Pheasant's Eye that is a poisonous perennial plant with nice yellow flowers seen in spring, hence its name...
This plant, native from south-eastern Europe, is threatened with extinction. In France (mainly in the south), it is part of the list of the protected plant species.

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 25ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXV

Merci beaucoup Febriani :-)
The Post of Indonesia had the good idea to do recycling for the issue of its souvenir sheet entitled "Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers" !
The margins and stamps of this sheet, originally issued on June 5th 2007, were adapted to announce the United Nations conference on climate change in Bali. This series was entitled "Melting ice, a hot topic ?" !
This revised sheet, issued on March 18th 2009, is included (not cancelled...) on the beautiful letter below mailed from the city of Tangerang.
Thank you very much Febriani :-)

This numbered sheet (No. 08,165 / 40,000) contains the official insignia (an ice crystal) of this International Philatelic campaign, bringing together forty postal administrations, to increase public awareness of the disastrous effects of global warming in particular on the polar regions.
This polar bear crying, under this burning sun, is quite moving...
The stamp in the upper right (Rp 2,000) is part of a series of three stamps and one souvenir sheet, issued on January 10th 2009, to celebrate the new lunar year of the Ox.
The two se-tenant stamps (Rp 1,500 each) at the center are part of a series of four stamps, issued on February 2th 2006, devoted to well-known folk tales all over Indonesia.
The left stamp evokes the story of two sisters, Bawang Merah (Red Onion), a lazy and proud girl and Bawang Putih (White Garlic), a helpful and kind girl...
The other stamp evokes Keong Emas (The Golden Snail) and the story of a rivalry between two princesses to get the favor of a prince from the neighboring kingdom...

Trésors du Musée National du Palais à Taïwan

Treasures from the National Palace Museum in Taiwan

With this new splendid cover from Taiwan, we can admire again some old paintings kept in the National Palace Museum in Taipei, one of the most important Museums in the world (Chinese calligraphy, bronzes, jades, ceramics, paintings...).
Thank you very much Wei Yi for this letter mailed on June 24th 2009 from Kaohsiung, a port city which is currently hosting the 8th World Games.
The two stamps in the top right (NT$ 5.00 and 19.00), issued on March 20th 1998, reproduce some parts of a painting by Liu Kuan-tao (Yuan Dynasty : 1271-1368) showing the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan (Shi-tzu) during a hunting expedition.

This work is very fragile and is exposed to the public only a few days each year.
The NT$ 9.00 stamp in the upper right is part of a series of four stamps issued on March 7th 2008 to announce the 21st Asian International Philatelic Exhibition "Taipei 2008". These four stamps reproduce ancient Chinese paintings featuring birds, including the one above showing a peacock and apricot and peony blossoms (by Lu Chi, Ming dynasty).
The four NT$ 5.00 stamps in the upper left are part of a beautiful souvenir sheet of 10 stamps (two horizontal bands of 5 stamps) issued on September 21th 2007, reproducing a work ("Eighteen scholars of the Tang Dynasty") painted by Emperor Hui-tsung (1082-1135, Sung Dynasty), himself a great painter and calligrapher.
I've finally already mentioned on this blog the last four stamps in the bottom left, part of a souvenir sheet of 8 stamps issued on July 16th 2008, reproducing the painting "A Hundred Deer" (Cing Dynasty).

Wei Yi was kind enough to include in his letter the three FDC above and below issued on October 10th 2003 by the postal administration of São Tomé and Príncipe, an archipelago located 350 km off the coast of Gabon.
São Tomé and Príncipe is one of the four African countries having official diplomatic relations with Taiwan and this series of stamps was celebrating the 6th anniversary of this relationship.
The sheet of four stamps above mentioned the cooperation between the two countries, in particular in the medical and agricultural fields.

The 2nd souvenir sheet above also refers to the cooperation between the two states with some infrastructure probably financed or co-financed by Taiwan : a cinema, the national library, a covered market and the road between Neves and Santa Catarina ( on São Tomé Island).

The last souvenir sheet above is depicting a meeting between the President of the Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, Fradique de Menezes (since 2001) and the former president of Taiwan, Chen Shui-bian (2000-2008).
I really like this fancy series because it reconciles us with the São Tomé and Príncipe's Philately, sadly famous for its excessive stamps issues having absolutely no link with the country...

Espace, justice et capoeira au Brésil

Space, justice and capoeira in Brazil

In October 2008, Russia and Brazil celebrated 180 years of diplomatic relations. The Brazilian Post has included this anniversary in its 2009 stamp program, as it's also the case to commemorate the diplomatic ties with 10 other countries, including France in next September (Year of France in Brazil).
A single R$ 2.35 stamp was issued on June 12th 2009 to celebrate these Brazil-Russia relations. It is included on the first FDC below with a FDC cancellation, issued in Brasilia, depicting a Russian Soyuz spacecraft.
Thank you very much Marcelo for the three FDC below :-)

These Soyuz spacecrafts are launched into space by Soyuz rockets from the Baikonur base in Kazakhstan. Following an agreement with the European Space Agency, Soyuz rockets (unmanned) may very soon be launched from the Kourou base in French Guiana to put satellites in orbit.
A Soyuz rocket is depicted on the stamp above to illustrate the space cooperation between Brazil and Russia. In April 2006, the first Brazilian astronaut, Marcos Pontes, was transported to the International Space Station aboard a Soyuz spacecraft.

The FDC above is devoted to the stamp, issued on May 29th 2009, commemorating the 30th anniversary of the founding of the judges training and improvement "Edésio Fernandes" school (EJEF). This school is part of the court of justice of the state of Minas Gerais (TJMG) where this First Day of Issue took place, more precisely in the city of Belo Horizonte.
The stamp depicts a representation of Themis, the goddess of justice (with her attributes : a sword and a balance), by the painter J. Bescaal, above the Rodrigues Campos courthouse (Minas Gerais).

Since July 15th 2008, capoeira has become intangible cultural heritage of Brazil.
The Brazilian Post has chosen to reproduce the work of the artist Carybé on a self-adhesive stamp issued on May 25th 2009, referring to the Roda (the circle of people within which capoeira is played) and the school of masters (mestres), typical of capoeira. This stamp appears in three copies on the nice FDC above with a cancellation from Salvador, capital of the state of Bahia, where was born in 1900, Mestre Bimba, one of the most famous Brazilian capoeira's masters, father of the "capoeira regional".
Capoeira, now a symbol of Brazil, is an Afro-Brazilian martial art that has its roots in African fighting methods and dances from the period of slavery in Brazil. This martial art, which can sometimes be likened to a dance using mainly the feet (the hands of the slaves were chained...), appeared in Brazil between the 16th and 18th century.

Timbres personnalisés en Norvège

"Personal stamps" in Norway

In a previous post about the beautiful souvenir sheet issued by the Norwegian Post as part of the EUROPA 2009 series, I mentioned a district of Oslo called Grensen...
Thank you Tonni to remind me that Grensen is in fact the name of a street of the capital of Norway, meaning "border".
To illustrate this correction, Tonni sent on June 26th 2009 the very interesting cover below franked with two personalized stamps reproducing some photographs taken by a clerk of the Grensen post office :-)

The Postal administration of Norway is in fact offering for sale to individuals and businesses a service of "Personal stamp". These stamps with a Permanent "A" rate (priority domestic letter up to 20g, NOK 8.00 currently) are sold in sheets of 20 stamps at a price of NOK 250.00 or NOK 12.50 each.
The stamp above on the left depicts the "Stortorvets Gjaestgiveri", located on Grensen street (N°1), one of the oldest restaurants in Oslo (opened in early 1700).
The other stamp shows a view of the Stortorget ("Big Square") square, a cobbled square whereis taking place a market since the mid-17th century. A statue of King Christian IV, King of Denmark and Norway between 1588 and 1648, can be seen in the center of this square.

Départ du Tour de France à Monaco

When the Tour starts in Monaco

For the first time, the Principality of Monaco has received the start of the 96th Tour de France on July 4th 2009 !
Monaco had seen the Tour's pack passing through six times in the past, between 1939 and 1964.
This July 4th 2009, 180 riders of the Tour de France have covered 15 km on a race against the clock that took place on a section of the F1 Grand Prix of Monaco circuit.
The Post of Monaco and the OETP (Stamp Issuing Office of Monaco) could not miss this international event and joined to issue a special illustrated envelope. Here is an example below, mailed on the day of the departure !
Thank you very much Christine for this nice surprise :-)

This envelope was franked with the € 0.56 stamp issued on July 2th 2009 (the date of presentation of the teams to the public) reproducing the same illustration as the one above left. This stamp, with the Monaco's flag colors on the background, is depicting a rider with the silhouette of the Princely Palace on the top right. The emblems of the Principality and of the start of the Tour are also included in the bottom left.
It's worth noting the very interesting mechanical blue cancellation affixed on the stamp on July 4th 2009 !
An unstamped version of this envelope was available since June 2th 2009 (€ 0.45 each or € 3.80 for a set of 10). The stamped version, like the one above, is offered for sale since July 2th 2009 (€ 1.00 € each or € 9.30 for a set of 10).
The other Principality of Andorra has hosted the Tour on 10th and 11th July 2009 and has also issued a commemorative stamp.

Protection des pôles et des glaciers - 24ème Partie

Preserve the Polar Regions and Glaciers - Part XXIV

I'm very happy to share with you today the 24th cover received on the theme of the "Protection of the Polar Regions and Glaciers" !
As a reminder, this International Philatelic campaign was initiated by the Chile and Finland and a quarantine of postal administrations have issued stamps devoted to this topic, with a common insignia : a stylized ice crystal.
I'm doubly pleased because this letter below is the first one received from Peru !
Thank you very much Cesar for this cover mailed from the port city of Chimbote :-)
Note that no sending date seems to be included on the small postmarks ??

Serpost, the Peruvian postal administration, has therefore issued on January 15th 2009 the nice souvenir sheet of four stamps above (total print run : 75,000, including the year 2008...).
A stamp is depicting the logo of the "International Polar Year 2007-2008".
The top two stamps evoke the Antarctic continent, one of the two polar regions the most affected by the effects of global warming, with a photograph of an icefield and the flag of Peru probably hoisted in the "Machu Picchu" research station opened since 1989 on King George Island (located 120 km from the Antarctic Peninsula).
The last stamp of this sheet, lower right, depicts the glacier Quelcayya (Cusco, southern Peru), the largest tropical icecap in the world that retreats of about 60 meters per year...
In Peru, where are located 70% of the tropical glaciers of the world (in the White Cordillera particularly), the Andes have lost at least 22% of their ice surface since 1970 !
In short or medium-term, the water supply of the arid coast of Peru (where most of the population is living) could be threatened...
