Nouvelles surprises canadiennes !

New Surprises from Canada !

I'm back after a few days off :-)
And I'm very pleased today to post a series of beautiful letters received in recent weeks from Canada (Manitoba and Alberta).
The first cover below was mailed on August 26, 2008 from the town of Pinawa (MB), Many thanks Jim :-)
Note the two very sharp rectangular postmarks, but what means the code 514136 ?
The 6 stamps were issued in booklets of 10 self-adhesive stamps with stickers (called envelope seals by Canadian Post) for some...Here are a few examples below !

The two round stickers (bottom left) were included in the booklet issued on June 20, 2008 devoted to the 100 years of the first publication of the novel "Anne of Green Gables", a joint issue with Japan . I've already spoken about this issue in previous posts. The two stamps issued in the same booklet (5 each) are on the left side of the cover. The seals represent some flowers mentioned in this book, including Buttercups, Anne's favourite flower...
I've also already spoken on this blog about the two other stamps on this letter : the 100 years of the Canadian Nurses Association and the Ice Hockey World Championship in Quebec and Halifax (two different booklets have been issued for these two cities).
The four other enveloppe seals evoke the last two stamps about the Olympics in Beijing and 100 years to Lifesaving Society of Canada. I talk about at the end of this post :-)

Above an other interesting cover mailed on August 28, 2008 from Calgary (AB). Thank you Glenn :-)
I will also speak below about the horizontal format stamp on the right celebrating the 150 years of the Province of British Columbia.
The small stamp on the left ($ 0.01) is part of a set of 8 low-values definitive stamps, issued on April 29, 1999 and devoted to traditional trades, including bookbinding depicted on this stamp. The next stamp ($ 0.03) represents a Golden-eyed Lacewing and is part of the beautiful series issued on October 12, 2007 devoted to beneficial insects (already mentioned on this blog too).
The last stamp in the middle is very interesting because this is a new correct version of a stamp issued initially on December 27, 2007...

This permanent domestic rate stamp was issued a first time in the pretty definitive set above (I publish again this FDC sent at the time by my friend Garnet !) representing the Canadian flag accompanied by five historic lighthouses of the country.
You can see at the extreme right the original stamp showing the Pachena Point lighthouse, built in 1907 on Vancouver Island (BC). But the former Pachena lighthouse keeper swiftly reported to the Canadian Post that the picture was reversed on this stamp ! Indeed, looking toward the ocean, the lighthouse should be on the left of the keeper's house, then it is shown at its right on that stamp...
The wrong stamp was not withdrawn from sale but a new correct version was issued I believe in May 2008 (when exactly ?). This is this new stamp that is included on the Glenn's letter :-)
It should be noted that on this new version, the keeper's house almost disappeared !

Here is above the last letter received from Edmonton, the capital of the province of Alberta.
Thank you again Garnet for the pretty Philatelic cancellations dated September 5, 2008 :-)
Garnet was kind enough to put in his letter the three official FDC corresponding to the three commemorative stamps on the right, I talk so about below !
The last 4c stamp on the left was issued on June 1, 1953 and represents the new Queen Elizabeth II in profile. This stamp commemorates her coronation, which took place the day after. This is the 2nd Canadian effigy of Elizabeth as queen, after a first set of five stamps issued on May 1, 1953 replacing stamps with King George VI portrait...

Above the only stamp issued on July 18, 2008 by the Canadian Post to commemorate Canada's participation (340 athletes) to the Beijing Olympic Games.
I find this stamp beautiful ! A splendid simplicity and sobriety with this stylish athlete waving the Canadian flag. Note that only the Olympic rings and the words "Canada 52c" also appear on the stamp, without mentioning the city of Beijing...
Note also the sobriety of the FDC cover with this flight of doves and the simple FDC cancellation, with "First Day" issue in Golden (!) in British Columbia.
Fyi, Canada finished these Games at the 19th rank with 18 medals including 3 gold (rowing, women wrestling and individual jumping, the first of history for this country !).

Canada will host in 2010 the coming Winter Olympics in Vancouver, the largest city of the province of British Columbia...which this year celebrates its 150 years !
Above the FDC issued on August 1, 2008 with the stamp commemorating this Anniversary. It is showing washing gold in a pan and contour of the Pacific coast of British Columbia, stressing the central role played by the Fraser river gold rush in its creation...
A portrait of Sir James Douglas, Governor of this British colony until 1864, is represented on the left on the cover. He played indeed a major role in connecting this former colony to the British Crown, fearing then it becomes a state of the United States, where most of the gold diggers were coming from...
I like this illustration with the map of Vancouver Island included into his costume :-)

To conclude, the last FDC above about the 100 years of the Lifesaving Society of Canada. The stamp was issued on July 25, 2008 during the National Drowning Prevention Week.
It also recalls that each year nearly 500,000 Canadian are certified in swimming, lifesaving or lifeguarding !
I'm not a big fan of this stamp even if its left part is reminding the "Baywatch" TV series for me !
I also like the original shape of the FDC cancellation (a lifeguard's chair). We find this same chair on the stickers available in the booklets of 10 stamps (see again the first cover at the beginning of this post !).
