Nouvelle merveille du Canada !

A new wonder from Canada !

I'm definitely very lucky with my Canadian friends who send me some quite incredible mails !
A new example with this letter who will make us travel back in time from the late 1970's until 2007 and 2008 through the 10 stamps that make up this beautiful postage. Thank you very much Garnet for this pure wonder mailed from Edmonton on Feb. 13, 2008 :-)
The 2 stamps with postal surcharge on the left are part of the 4th set of 3 stamps, issued on January 7, 1976, devoted to the 21st Olympic Games to be held in Montreal from 17 July to 1 August 1976. These Olympics are famous because of the boycott of African countries denouncing the participation of New Zealand, which had previously carried out a rugby tour to apartheid South Africa...Sport speaking, we remember the Romanian gymnast Nadia Comaneci who got notes up to 10.00 for the 1st time in history !

This beautiful series represents athletes in action, like the vaulting gymnast and soccer player on the 2 stamps above. The 3rd stamp of this series represents a women playing basketball, female basketball being present for the 1st time durings these Games.
The 6 stamps in the middle are part of a series spread over several years between 1977 and 1981, devoted to animal species threatened with extinction.
The 2 stamps representing an Eastern Spiny Soft-shelled Turtle and a Bowhead Whale were issued on April 10, 1979, the Atlantic Whitefish and Greater Prairie Chicken on May 6, 1980, the Vancouver Island Marmot and the Wood Bison on April 6, 1981. Two other stamps, representing an Eastern Cougar and a Peregrine Falcon also comprise this nice series.
I have already mentioned the last 2 stamps, recently issued, in previous posts. The top right, issued in 2007, speaks of the 150 anniversary of the founding of Ottawa, the capital city. The other stamp, issued on January 8, 2008, referred to the Lunar New Year of the Rat. This 52c isolated stamp, representing a married, also has been issued without postage value, in a special souvenir sheet comprising another stamp showing the groom.
One little criticism about the automatic cancellation (almost unreadable...) of the Canada Post that is applied only on 2 of the 10 stamps :-(( I still manage to read the zip code that begins with T5L (the 'T' letter being reserved for zip code's cities in Alberta), corresponding to the North Westmount/West Calder/East Mistatim districts in Edmonton.

Finally Garnet was kind enough to join to his letter several Philatelic interesting pieces, including the beautiful FDC above, issued December 27, 2007, devoted to 5 Canadian lighthouses.
These 5 self-adhesive stamps issued in booklet of 10 have the particularity of not having a face value but a letter 'P' (Permanent) within a maple leaf, corresponding to domestic rate (currently 52c. The Canadian Post is issuing these types of stamps since late 2007. It's a bit the equivalent of our TVP stamps in France.
The 5 lighthouses represented are : Warren Landing (1908, Manitoba) on the west bank of the Nelson River, Point Clark (1855, Ontario) off the coast of Lake Huron, Cap-des-Rosiers (1858, Quebec), the highest lighthouse in Canada at the eastern corner of the Gaspé Peninsula, Pachena Point (1909, British Columbia) on the west coast of Vancouver Island and Sambro Island (1758, Nova Scotia), the oldest working lighthouse in North America standing guard over Halifax harbour.
It's at Sambro that took place the "first Day of issue" of this set. I like the special cancellation designed for this occasion which applies in one time on the 5 stamps :-)

Gem from Airdrie a dit…

HI Eric,Just a comment on the Canadian Lighthouse FDC in your blog of 08Mar. The stamp on the far right showing the Pachena Point Lighthouse, was issued incorrectly. The photograph used to create the original design was reversed, putting the light keeper's house to the left of the lighthouse when it should have been to the right. Canada Post will issue in June a revised design Pachena Point stamp, correcting the mistake. Just thought you might like to know.Cheers, Glenn from Calgary

Hi Eric, just a comment on the Canadian Lighthouse FDC in your blog of 08Mar. The stamp on the right showing the Pachena Point Lighthouse was designed incorrectly. Canada Post will issue in June a revised design of this stamp. The redesigned issue in June will correct the mistake. Just thought you might like to know this.Cheers, Glenn from Calgary

Eric Contesse a dit…

Hi Glenn,
thanks for your comment !
It's always hard to understand that postal administrations can make mistake on their stamps, after all the different checks before issuing the stamps...
But I'm so very happy to have this incorrect stamp in my collection :-)
I hope I'll receive the new one issued in June !
Thanks again Glenn
Regards
Eric
