100 ans de l'Université de technologie d'Helsinki

Helsinki Technical University Centenary

It's indeed in 1908 that was created, not far from Espoo, the Helsinki University of Technology (TKK in Finnish). 2008 also marks the almost 160 years of technical teachings in Finland.
The Finnish Post logically issued a souvenir sheet to celebrate this double anniversary !
This is this beautiful sheet we can found on the FDC cover below, posted January 24, 2008. Thank you very much Hannele for this wonderful surprise :-)
This university is known worldwide thanks to its campus, designed by the architect Alvar Aalto (1898-1976). Aalto was a follower of functionalism and of organic architecture, his works being smoothly integrated into the landscape.
This university includes 246 teachers and 15.000 students divided into 19 departments (listed at the top right on the souvenir sheet).

The lower part of the sheet shows the exterior of the building in evening light, with the auditorium on the right, whose shape has inspired the Univeristy's logo on the "first day" postmark.
The upper sections depicts the pastel ceiling structures of the assembly hall.
The Klass 1 stamp (0.70 € currently) on the left represents a robot built in the university.
This university is worthy of the reputation of Finland in NTI, thanks to its low-temperature laboratory, its research in mobile telephony (thanks Nokia !)...
This M/S is also using new technologies with its Upcode in its top right corner ! This two-dimensional image allows, with your cell phone, to connect to the Internet (the so-called "mobile tagging").
This Upcode allows you to connect to the official website of University's centenary (but also to the Stamp Shop at the Finnish Post !), provided you download a special free software on the www.upcode.fr website...
The Swiss post office had already issued a self-adhesive stamp in 2007 with the same technology, which it then called BeeTagg.
Finally, I wanted to mention the fact that the Finnish souvenir sheets systematically include the names of the stamps designers and/or drawers and/or photographers, as well as the date of the 1st day of issue and its Finnish Post internal number, which is quite unique I think, no ?
