100 ans du scoutisme au Belarus

Scouting Centenary in Belarus

After Taiwan and Italy, here is below the stamps issue of Belarus to celebrate the 100 years of the Scout Movement in 2007.
Thank you Ihar for this nice letter, posted from the city of Gomel (south-east of the country).
The Belarus Post has issued 2 commemorative stamps (value BYR500 and BYR1000) on May 4, 2007, as part of the EUROPA issue.
The BYR500 stamp, on a red background, shows one of the most famous knots of scouting, the square knot. This knot that scouts use to tie their scarves, the flat knot being used for buildings.
The 1000BYR stamp, on a green background, shows the emblem of the scouts association of Belarus, in the shape of a fleur de lys found also on the emblem of the World Organization of the Scout Movement.

The green and red are the 2 colours of the flag of Belarus.
These 2 stamps were issued in miniature sheets of 8 stamps (for each stamp separately) and a nice booklet gathering the 2 stamps : 4 BYR500 stamps, 3 BYR1000 stamps and a vignette representing Baden-Powell, the scout movement founder in 1907.
This is the right half of this booklet, including the vignette, which appears on the cover above ! This booklet has been printed in only 10.000 copies...
Here is below the cover and full miniature sheet of this nice booklet :

This booklet also contains, on the inside, the "1st Day" postmark of this series !
By the way, do you know why the fleur de lys was chosen as the symbol of Scouting ?
This flower was the symbol used in old maps indicating the location of the north. It is a direction to follow. It is also the symbol of purity...
